To receive ETH with MyEtherWallet (MEW), share your public wallet address or its QR code—never your recovery phrase or private key. To send ETH, enter the recipient’s address and amount, leave enough ETH to pay Ethereum’s network fee, then check the transaction in MEW’s history or a blockchain explorer.
Before you send or receive ETH
MEW is a self-custodial wallet: you control the wallet’s secret recovery information, and MEW says it cannot restore access if you lose it. Treat your recovery phrase and private key as secrets. MEW warns users not to share them or store them on internet-connected devices or services; anyone asking for them to receive a payment is not a legitimate sender. A sender needs only your public address. MEW’s wallet creation guide and security guidance explain these responsibilities.
The specific steps below follow MEW’s iOS mobile instructions. Android, Enkrypt, Portfolio, and hardware-wallet screens may differ; use the instructions for your access method in MEW’s send-and-receive guide or its relevant help section.
How to receive ETH in MEW Mobile for iOS
- Open MEW Mobile and select the account you want to receive ETH into.
- Tap Deposit. The app displays the account’s public address and a QR code.
- Copy or share the address, or show the QR code to the sender. Check that the sender is using the address you intended to provide.
- After the sender submits the transfer, check the account’s asset list and transaction history. For an additional view, look up the transaction or address in ethVM.
The address is designed to be shared; it does not give someone authority to spend your funds. Your recovery phrase and private key do. MEW explicitly says that a sender should only need your wallet address to send ETH or ERC-20 tokens.

How to send ETH in MEW Mobile for iOS
- Open the app and select the account holding the ETH.
- Tap Send, then enter the recipient’s address or scan its QR code.
- Select ETH and enter the amount.
- Choose the transaction speed or fee option shown in the app.
- Immediately before confirming, check the destination address and amount carefully. MEW warns that transactions are final once processed.
- Authenticate as prompted and wait for the transaction to process. Check recent transaction history or ethVM for its status.
Transaction speed and fee choices are presented in the app, but the underlying fee is an Ethereum network fee, not a MEW service charge. MEW says it does not set or collect gas fees. Fees vary, and the cited MEW help material does not establish a stable current fee or a guaranteed processing time; review the quote shown before confirming. Why a transaction needs ETH for gas
Ethereum uses gas to pay for the network computation involved in a transaction. The fee is paid in ETH. You need enough ETH not only to send ETH, but also to send tokens or interact with a smart contract. If the account cannot cover the fee, MEW may report insufficient funds or “not enough ETH.”

MEW says it has no minimum transfer amount or daily transaction limit for transfers between self-custody wallets. That does not remove the gas requirement, and it does not establish what limits an exchange, smart contract, or another service may impose. MEW’s minimum-requirement article describes its own scope.
What to do if a transaction is pending or fails
If it is pending
Check the transaction’s status in MEW history or through a blockchain explorer. Once a transaction has been mined and included in a block, MEW says it cannot be canceled or replaced. MEW’s cancel-or-replace instructions are for expert users, are not guaranteed to work, and warn that attempts can create more stuck transactions. Do not change nonce or gas settings unless you understand the consequences; consult MEW’s current pending-transaction instructions.

If it failed
A failed transaction can still incur a network fee. Gas pays for computation the network performed to validate and execute the attempt, even when the intended action does not succeed. A failed status does not by itself mean that ETH reached the intended recipient. Review the transaction details in MEW history or an explorer; MEW’s failed-transaction help article points readers to Etherscan for fee details. MEW documents several access methods, including MEW Mobile, its Enkrypt browser extension, hardware wallets, and software access through Portfolio. The right route depends on the device you use and how you want keys held and transactions approved; the available documentation does not provide a comparative security test or ranking. MEW recommends MEW Mobile for mobile use and Enkrypt for people who want a browser extension. For larger long-term holdings, its wallet-creation guide recommends hardware wallets such as Trezor or Ledger. Neither is required for a basic send or receive. If using a hardware wallet, never enter its recovery phrase into an online wallet; MEW’s Ledger guide includes this warning. Compatibility is not universal: MEW says BitBox02 is no longer supported by the current Portfolio version, although it documents a legacy version.
