Before acting on a request for money, a new payee, changed bank details, or confidential information, verify it by calling a number you already trust and confirm the destination account separately. Advisers should also protect their WhatsApp accounts, but clients need their own payment checks.
How a WhatsApp message can be misused
A scammer may try to register an adviser’s number using a stolen verification code, access the account through an unauthorized linked device, or trick the adviser into opening a malicious file. Another route is impersonation from a different number or profile. If a message looks credible, it may be used to request an urgent transfer, an emergency loan, a change to bank details, or sensitive information. These are documented risks and examples; they do not establish how often wealth advisers are targeted.
WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption protects message content in transit, but it does not prove who sent a particular message or whether a financial instruction is legitimate. A familiar profile and a long-running conversation are not independent verification.
A regional example: malicious attachments in India
On 7 August 2026, India’s Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre warned that files disguised as account statements or regulatory communications could compromise Windows devices and active WhatsApp Web sessions, after which criminals might send fraudulent transfer instructions. The advisory said, “Regulators such as the RBI never distribute software updates, security fixes or account statements through WhatsApp attachments.” This is an India-specific warning, not a claim that every attack works this way. Protect the adviser’s WhatsApp account
WhatsApp’s account-security features can reduce the risk of unauthorized access, but they do not replace a firm’s payment controls or a client’s identity checks. Settings and availability can vary by device and rollout; follow the current wording in the official app.
- Enable two-step verification. In WhatsApp, open Settings (or Menu) > Account > Two-step verification, then follow the prompts. Add recovery details if offered. WhatsApp has begun upgrading the six-digit PIN to a password, so use the current in-app instructions. Never share the registration code, password, or PIN. - Review linked devices. Open Settings or Menu > Linked Devices. Sign out of any session you do not recognize and check again after a suspicious prompt. WhatsApp account security tips
- Secure the devices themselves. Use the phone’s screen lock and keep its operating system and apps updated. Enable WhatsApp’s app lock if available. App lock is an additional barrier to opening the app; it does not remove an attacker who already has account access. WhatsApp account security tips
- Use official apps and services. Install WhatsApp from its official app store listing and access WhatsApp Web or Desktop through official channels. Do not install a file presented in a message as an update or security fix. WhatsApp security overview
Verify payment instructions independently
Clients should establish a verification routine before a suspicious message arrives. Save the adviser’s office and mobile numbers from a trusted source, such as existing firm paperwork or a previously verified contact. If a message is unexpected, urgent, secret, or changes payment details, pause and call that saved number—not a number or link supplied in the message.

Meta’s 5 August 2025 advice for unusual or suspicious messages is “PAUSE, QUESTION, VERIFY.” Meta also said it detected and banned more than 6.8 million WhatsApp accounts linked to scam centers in the first six months of 2025. That is an enforcement count, not an estimate of victims, total scams, or adviser-targeted losses. Meta: New WhatsApp Tools and Tips to Beat Messaging Scams
Authorities have also warned about requests sent from compromised social accounts. The Singapore Police Force’s 8 May 2026 advisory urged the public to be wary of unusual WhatsApp money requests and to verify them separately. Its guidance is local to Singapore, but the independent-callback principle applies wherever a client needs to authenticate a payment request. What to do if you receive a code or suspect compromise
You received a verification code you did not request
Do not share it. WhatsApp says an unsolicited code can mean someone entered your number by mistake or is attempting to register your account; the alert does not identify who requested it. Without the SMS verification code, someone attempting to verify your number cannot complete that registration attempt. WhatsApp: Received verification code without requesting it
You think the account has been taken over
Use WhatsApp’s official recovery guidance. WhatsApp says you can recover a lost account by re-registering your phone number. Then review linked devices and use WhatsApp’s in-app report or support route. WhatsApp security features, safety tools and tips

You sent money or exposed payment details
- Contact your bank or payment provider immediately through its official app or a number obtained independently. Ask whether the transfer can be stopped or recalled.
- Preserve the messages, phone numbers, transaction reference, and any relevant attachments or screenshots.
- Report the incident to local police or the appropriate financial regulator, following the process for your location and payment method.
- If an adviser was impersonated, contact the adviser or firm through a previously verified channel so it can warn other clients if appropriate. Report the account or message to WhatsApp; WhatsApp says reports are not disclosed to the sender.
Recovery options, reporting routes, deadlines, and reimbursement rules depend on where you live, the bank, and the payment method. There is no universal procedure established for every transfer.

Who is responsible for which protection?
| Risk to address | Useful protection | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Unauthorized number registration | Two-step verification, recovery details, and keeping codes and credentials private | That a message from an account is a valid financial instruction |
| Unrecognized account session | Review Linked Devices and remove sessions you do not recognize | That no other device or account compromise exists |
| Uncertain sender identity | Call a saved, independently verified number or use another established channel | That a familiar chat history alone authenticates the sender |
| Payment sent to a fraudulent destination | Confirm beneficiary and full account details and follow the firm’s transfer controls | That WhatsApp can validate a beneficiary or guarantee recovery |
