Neither Stripe nor PayPal Braintree is the better choice for every business. The right option depends on where your business can open an account, which payment methods your customers use, the full cost of your transaction mix, and how you handle subscriptions, fraud and integration. Compare both against the same business profile rather than choosing from a headline rate or feature list.
Stripe vs. Braintree at a glance
| Factor | Stripe | PayPal Braintree |
|---|---|---|
| Payment options | Cards and additional methods that depend on the Stripe account’s country. Product and account setup affect availability. | Cards and PayPal, plus qualifying options such as ACH Direct Debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, local methods and Venmo. Availability depends on region, banking partner and account settings. |
| Published price evidence | Stripe’s US pricing page lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction. Other transaction types and products may add fees. | A surfaced official pricing document is a US PDF with an asset filename dated 2024-09. The available information does not establish a current, comparable rate. Confirm current country-specific pricing and contract terms with Braintree. |
| Recurring billing | Stripe offers Billing. Confirm that its current features and implementation meet your subscription requirements. | Uses plans, payment methods stored in the Vault and subscriptions. Its recurring billing is not compatible with Braintree Marketplace. |
| Fraud tools | Radar features and fees depend on the product or option selected. | Fraud Protection Lite, Fraud Protection Advanced and chargeback-protection offerings are documented; premium tools are not enabled by default and may cost extra. |
| Product scope | Payment, checkout, billing, fraud and in-person Terminal products. | Payment processing that supports cards and PayPal, with other methods subject to merchant configuration and region. |
These are differences to investigate, not a performance ranking. Feature descriptions alone do not establish which provider will be easier to implement, improve conversion, authorize more payments or deliver better reliability for a particular merchant.
Which is cheaper: Stripe or Braintree?
There is no supported universal price winner. The known Stripe figure is specific to the US: Stripe lists 2.9% + 30¢ per successful domestic card transaction on its US pricing page. It is not a worldwide rate, and Stripe lists additional fees for some transaction types and products. Braintree’s surfaced US pricing PDF does not provide enough current information here for a like-for-like comparison. Ask both providers for current terms for your business country before deciding.
Build a like-for-like cost estimate
Use the same assumptions for each provider. Estimate fees against your expected monthly volume and average transaction, then include the factors that apply to your business:

- Payment-method mix, such as cards, PayPal or local methods.
- Refunds and disputes.
- Optional fraud, billing or other product fees.
Check what each quote includes and whether its terms are recurring, transaction-based, account-specific or negotiated. A headline domestic-card rate cannot by itself tell you what a mixed payment profile will cost.
Which payment methods can you accept?
Start with your merchant country and account eligibility, then verify the methods enabled for your specific account. A provider’s overall method list does not mean every option is available to every merchant or buyer.

Stripe
Stripe says additional payment methods depend on the country of the Stripe account. Check support for your business location, buyer locations and currencies, as well as settlement arrangements, before building around a particular method.
Braintree
Braintree documents card and PayPal acceptance and also lists options including ACH Direct Debit, Apple Pay, Google Pay, local payment methods and Venmo. Its documentation qualifies availability: ACH Direct Debit is available to most US merchants; Apple Pay and Google Pay are available to many merchants across listed regions, subject to processor settings or approval; Venmo is US-only. Banking partner and merchant configuration also matter.

Braintree documentation says Visa Click to Pay (Secure Remote Commerce) support ends effective January 20, 2026. That date has passed; do not rely on the method being supported without checking Braintree’s current documentation.
Which is better for subscriptions?
Choose based on the subscription lifecycle you need, not simply whether a provider offers recurring billing. Compare how each setup handles billing schedules, retries, invoices, proration, tax and the payment methods your subscribers will use. Stripe lists Billing as a product, but the features and constraints for a particular implementation need to be checked against current documentation for that setup.

How Braintree recurring billing works
Braintree’s documented flow uses plans, payment methods saved in the Vault and subscriptions associated with a customer’s preferred payment method. Plans define the billing-cycle length, billing date, default cost and number of cycles. Declined-payment retry logic can be configured in the Control Panel. Braintree states its recurring billing is not compatible with Braintree Marketplace, which is a material constraint if you operate a marketplace.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare fraud and dispute tools?
Compare what is included, what costs extra, which payment methods are supported and whether your account is eligible. Stripe describes Radar fraud protection, with fees and plan details that differ by option. Braintree documents Fraud Protection Lite, Fraud Protection Advanced and chargeback-protection offerings; premium tools are not enabled by default, may have additional fees and vary in availability. The supported methods are not necessarily identical across tools.

A practical decision sequence
- Confirm eligibility. Verify that your business can open and operate the required merchant account in its country.
- List essential payment methods. Check that each is available and enabled for your account, buyers, currencies, banking partner and integration type, including any required approval.
- Compare total cost. Get current country-specific pricing and apply both providers’ terms to the same transaction profile, including cross-border activity, conversion, disputes and optional services.
- Test the billing fit. Map your subscription needs—schedules, retries, proration, invoices, tax and payment methods—to the current product capabilities. Account for Braintree’s Marketplace incompatibility if relevant.
- Check fraud and dispute coverage. Verify included and paid tools, eligibility, method support and the responsibilities that remain with your business.
- Assess implementation fit. Compare the integration with your existing site or platform, available engineering resources and support needs. Feature pages alone do not establish ease or performance.
When Stripe or Braintree may fit better
Consider Stripe when
- Stripe supports your country and the methods your customers need.
- You want to evaluate a suite that includes payments, Billing, Radar and in-person Terminal products.
- Your matched cost estimate and subscription requirements fit the current Stripe products and pricing for your account.
Consider Braintree when
- Your account can use Braintree’s supported payment methods and you specifically need options such as PayPal, subject to eligibility and configuration.
- Its Vault, plans and subscription flow fit your billing model, and Marketplace compatibility is not a requirement for that recurring-billing setup.
- Its current country-specific offer, integration and eligible fraud tools work for your transaction mix and operating needs.
These are reasons to investigate a provider, not guarantees that it is available, cheaper or a better performer for your business. Verify the details for your own merchant account before migrating or building around a method.
