The best business savings account is the one that earns a competitive return on the balance your company will actually keep, without fees or access restrictions that undermine the value. Compare the current APY at your balance, fee-waiver rules, deposit and withdrawal needs, and how your business ownership affects FDIC coverage. Rates can vary by date and location, so confirm each bank’s current disclosure before opening an account.

How to choose a business savings account

Start with your likely balance and cash-flow pattern, not the highest advertised APY. Then calculate what you will earn after recurring fees and check how quickly and easily you can move the money when the business needs it.

  • APY at your balance: Check whether the rate applies to the whole balance or only a tier, and record its effective date. Variable rates can change.
  • Fees and waiver conditions: Compare monthly maintenance fees, minimum balances to waive them, and charges tied to deposits or other account activity.
  • Opening and ongoing minimums: A low opening deposit does not necessarily mean there is no minimum balance to earn the stated APY or avoid fees.
  • Access: Check transfer timing, ATM access, check-writing, and any transaction limits stated in the account terms.
  • Insurance: Determine how deposits are aggregated under the account owner’s legal structure and ownership category.

Rates below are dated examples, not a live ranking. Confirm current terms and availability for your business’s location before applying.

Business savings accounts and alternatives to compare

Provider and account Published rate or terms What to weigh
TAB Bank Business Savings 0.25% APY, effective October 3, 2026; $25 minimum to open and $1 minimum to earn the stated APY. Variable rate. No check-writing or ATM card, so assess whether transfers provide enough access. See TAB Bank’s rates and terms.
TAB Bank Business Money Market 3.25% APY on the first $1 million and 0.25% on the remaining balance, effective October 3, 2026; $25 minimum to open and $1 minimum for the stated APY. Variable rate. The top tier does not apply to balances above $1 million. Review the account’s liquidity terms and calculate the blended return on your expected balance. See TAB Bank’s rates and terms.
U.S. Bank Basic Business Savings $5 monthly fee, waived with a $500 daily balance; $25 minimum opening deposit. APY varies by ZIP code. Excess deposited-item and cash-deposit charges may apply. Check the rate offered in your location and whether your usual balance and deposit activity trigger costs. See U.S. Bank’s account terms.
U.S. Bank Business Savings Sweep Automatically sweeps excess funds from linked business checking to savings daily. A $50 one-time setup fee and a $45 or $70 monthly sweep fee apply depending on the connected checking account, in addition to savings maintenance fees. Automation may suit a business that wants routine transfers, but include both sweep and savings fees in the return calculation. See U.S. Bank’s account terms.
Citizens Business Savings No minimum to open; $4.99 monthly maintenance fee, waived with a $500 average daily balance. Variable rate may change daily. Accessible opening terms do not remove the need to meet the balance threshold or check the current rate. See Citizens’ account details.
Armed Forces Bank Business Savings 0.03% APY on all balances; $25 to open; $100 minimum balance to avoid a $5 monthly fee; $25 early-closure fee within 90 days. Rate reported accurate October 3, 2026. Consider the low stated APY alongside the ongoing fee threshold and early-closure charge, and reconfirm current terms. See Armed Forces Bank’s terms.
Republic Bank Business Money Market or CDs Tiered money-market rates and term-specific CD rates; its APY page states September 30, 2026. A CD is a term deposit, not a savings account; compare its lockup and early-withdrawal terms with the money market’s liquidity. See Republic Bank’s business savings options.

Calculate the return after fees

To compare accounts fairly, estimate interest on the balance you expect to maintain, then subtract fees you are likely to pay. Use the APY for the relevant balance tier and account terms; do not apply a promotional or top-tier rate to money that does not qualify.

  1. Estimate the typical balance, not just the amount deposited on opening day.
  2. Find the APY for that balance and note the rate’s effective date and any location-specific terms.
  3. Estimate annual interest using the bank’s disclosed APY and your expected balance, accounting for tiers when applicable.
  4. Subtract monthly maintenance, sweep, and activity fees that your business is unlikely to avoid.
  5. Compare the resulting return with the account’s access and operational features.

For example, U.S. Bank’s Basic Business Savings fee is waived only when the daily balance is at least $500. A balance below that threshold can incur the $5 monthly fee, so a quoted APY alone does not show the net value. TAB Bank’s Business Money Market rate has a separate tier above the first $1 million; the 3.25% APY applies only to that first tier, while the remainder is listed at 0.25% as of October 3, 2026. U.S. Bank fee and rate details; TAB Bank rate tiers.

Choose access that fits your cash flow

Savings products can differ in how money moves in and out. TAB Bank says its Business Savings account has no check-writing ability or ATM card. U.S. Bank’s sweep option moves excess funds from linked business checking to savings daily, but carries setup and monthly sweep charges. These features suit different operating patterns: a reserve account used occasionally may not need direct payment tools, while a business that wants automated transfers should assess whether the sweep fee is justified by the time saved and interest earned.

Ask the bank for the account’s current transaction limits, transfer timing, and any charges for deposits or withdrawals. The available terms can depend on the specific product and should be checked before opening.

Understand FDIC coverage for business deposits

The FDIC states: “The standard deposit insurance amount is $250,000 per depositor, per FDIC-insured bank, per ownership category.” The FDIC’s statement was last updated April 1, 2024. FDIC: Understanding Deposit Insurance.

For eligible corporations, partnerships, and unincorporated associations, deposits generally receive coverage up to $250,000 for the entity at one insured bank, subject to FDIC eligibility requirements. Accounts owned by the same entity are combined; opening multiple accounts or using different divisions does not automatically create additional limits. FDIC rules for corporations, partnerships, and unincorporated associations.

Sole-proprietorship deposits are treated differently: they count with the owner’s other single-account deposits at the same bank. If the business holds substantial cash or has a more complex ownership structure, confirm the insurance calculation with the bank or the FDIC. FDIC rules for single accounts.

Know which product you are comparing

A money market deposit account is a bank deposit product; a money market mutual fund is an investment product. They are not interchangeable, and their protections differ. TAB Bank describes its money market account as a deposit account and separately notes that a money market fund can lose money. Check the actual account terms and insurance status rather than relying on the words “money market” alone. TAB Bank’s explanation.

A certificate of deposit (CD) is also different from a savings account: it has a specified term, and access before maturity may be restricted or subject to a penalty. Compare term and withdrawal rules rather than treating a CD’s APY as directly equivalent to an at-call savings rate.

Questions to ask before opening an account

  • What is the APY today for my expected balance, and when was it effective?
  • Does the rate vary by location, balance tier, or relationship with the bank?
  • What minimum balance is required to open, earn the stated APY, and avoid monthly fees?
  • Which transaction, cash-deposit, or transfer charges could apply to our normal activity?
  • Can authorized employees access the account, and what transfer controls are available?
  • How will the bank classify the owner for FDIC insurance, and how are existing deposits aggregated?
