At a June 2024 Donald Trump rally in Las Vegas, Marjorie Taylor Greene reportedly said, “If you think gas prices are high now, just wait until you’re forced to drive an electric vehicle.” The remark prompted online criticism, but its headline shorthand needs clarification: battery-electric cars do not use gasoline, and the cost of charging is not the same thing as a gas price.
What did Marjorie Taylor Greene say?
Futurism reporter Maggie Harrison Dupré reported that Greene made the remark at a Sunday Trump rally in Las Vegas. The report says attendees booed after a pause, after which Greene added, “America is sick of it.” These quotations are attributed to Futurism’s event account; the sources available do not include an official rally transcript or primary recording for independent verification. Read Futurism’s June 11, 2024 report.
The headline phrase “gas prices for electric cars” is framing, not Greene’s exact wording. Her reported line contrasts current gasoline prices with the prospect of being required to drive an electric vehicle. It does not literally say that electric cars buy gasoline.
Do electric cars use gas?
It depends on the type of vehicle. A battery-electric vehicle (BEV) runs on electricity stored in a battery and has no gasoline engine for propulsion. A plug-in hybrid (PHEV) can run on electricity and gasoline; its fuel use depends on driving conditions and whether it is operating in electric or gasoline mode. A conventional hybrid uses gasoline and a smaller battery that recovers energy, such as through regenerative braking. The EPA explains these vehicle types; the Department of Energy’s Alternative Fuels Data Center also describes electricity as a vehicle fuel.

Are EV charging costs higher than gasoline?
There is no single answer for every driver. A fair operating-cost comparison looks at the cost to travel a similar distance in comparable vehicles—not a gallon of gasoline against a unit of electricity. Results depend on local electricity and gasoline prices, vehicle efficiency, and how and where the EV is charged. Home charging and public charging can have different prices, and the charging mix matters. The EPA says charging a plug-in vehicle is typically cheaper than filling a gas tank, while noting that costs vary; it provides a personalized comparison based on local prices and driving habits.
A U.S. Department of Energy comparison published May 17, 2021, estimated a national-average cost of $1.16 per eGallon for electricity versus $2.85 per gallon of regular gasoline, with estimated EV fuel-cost savings of about 60%. Those figures used national-average prices on March 31, 2021, so they are historical—not a current estimate or a promise of savings for an individual driver. How did people react to the remark?
Futurism reported online mockery and quoted Stephen King’s response: “You can’t make this crap up.” The article also recounted supportive comments, including claims that gas prices were being manipulated to encourage EV purchases. Its examples do not measure how representative either reaction was, and the reporting does not substantiate the manipulation allegation. Futurism’s account includes the cited reactions.
