BMW USA does not extend its original warranty; it offers Vehicle Service Contracts (VSCs) that may cover specified repairs after the New Vehicle Limited Warranty expires. BMW describes two tiers—Platinum and Powertrain—and advertises coverage for up to seven years or 100,000 miles, subject to vehicle and plan eligibility. The written, VIN-specific contract—not the marketing summary—determines the actual term, covered parts, exclusions, deductible, and other conditions.
What BMW calls an extended warranty
“BMW extended warranty” is common shopper shorthand. In the United States, BMW calls its product a Vehicle Service Contract: BMW says it does not extend the factory warranty, but offers VSC coverage for many components after that warranty ends. See BMW USA’s Financial Services Protection Plans for the program overview.
BMW advertises VSC terms of up to seven years or 100,000 miles. That is a maximum, not a guarantee that every vehicle qualifies for the longest term. Eligibility and the term available for a particular vehicle depend on its details and selected plan; get those in a quote tied to the VIN and confirm them in the agreement.
What Platinum and Powertrain cover
BMW summarizes Platinum as its broader tier and Powertrain as focused on core drivetrain components. These descriptions are not full lists of covered parts: the contract’s covered-part provisions, exclusions, and conditions govern a claim.

#1 Best Overall
| Coverage tier | BMW’s summary | Vehicle categories BMW identifies |
|---|---|---|
| Platinum | Most major components, including electronics, drivetrain, and systems specific to plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles. | New, pre-owned, and BMW Certified vehicles; BMW also names plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles on its protection page. |
| Powertrain | Engine, transmission, and drivetrain components. | BMW says this tier is available for high-mileage vehicles. |
BMW says covered repairs are handled at authorized BMW repair facilities using genuine new or remanufactured BMW parts. If those are unavailable, parts of like kind and quality may be used. Do not assume that every electronic, hybrid, or EV component is covered simply because it is mentioned in the Platinum summary; check the actual agreement.
How the VSC relates to the factory warranty
For U.S.-specification BMW vehicles, the New Vehicle Limited Warranty lasts 48 months or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. BMW measures the period from the first retail sale or an earlier qualifying in-service date, such as when a vehicle is first placed in service as a demonstrator, Aftersales Mobility Program vehicle, or company vehicle. BMW says the warranty applies to first and subsequent purchasers. Because the in-service date can precede a private owner’s purchase, check the vehicle’s actual warranty status rather than counting from the day you bought it. BMW explains the period and start date in its New Vehicle Limited Warranty transferability FAQ.

BMW Ultimate Care is maintenance, not repair coverage
BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled maintenance under terms that depend on model year and program; it is not the VSC for covered repairs after the factory warranty expires. BMW’s 2026 model-year warranty booklet states scheduled maintenance coverage of 36 months or 36,000 miles, whichever comes first, for the program described in that booklet. Do not treat that maintenance figure as the term of an extended repair contract. For model-specific maintenance information, consult BMW’s Service and Warranty Books.
What a BMW VSC costs
BMW does not publish one standard price. Its stated price factors are vehicle model, age, mileage, and selected coverage tier. Request a dated quote from a BMW Center for your VIN; compare quotes only when the term, deductible, coverage tier, and other contract terms match.

What to check before you buy
Ask the BMW Center for the agreement that applies to your vehicle and state, then verify these details before signing:
- Eligibility and term: Does the VIN qualify, and what are the contract’s start date, end date, and mileage limit?
- Covered parts and exclusions: Which specific components are included, and what conditions or exclusions could affect a repair?
- Deductible: How much is it, and does it apply per repair visit or per repair?
- Claims and repair location: Who must authorize a repair, and where can covered work be performed?
- Existing coverage: How does the VSC overlap with remaining factory warranty, BMW Certified Pre-Owned coverage, or any third-party contract you already have?
- Cancellation and transfer: What provisions apply to cancellation, refunds, and transfer to a later owner?
- State-specific terms: Which state’s agreement applies, and does it change any of the terms above?
BMW’s public overview does not settle those vehicle- and agreement-specific details. The applicable state agreement and your vehicle’s actual status control.
