GM’s 6.2L V8 recall has drawn two additional challenges: a federal safety inquiry into reports of engine failures after the recall remedy, and a class-action complaint alleging consumer-protection violations. Neither development proves that the repair failed or that GM is liable. For owners, the practical first step is still to check the vehicle identification number (VIN) and follow the vehicle-specific recall instructions.
Why the recall is back in focus
The two developments are separate. On January 16, 2026, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) Office of Defects Investigation opened Recall Query RQ26001 to assess the adequacy of the remedy for Recall 25V-274. Its opening resume says NHTSA had received 36 Vehicle Owner Questionnaires alleging engine failure after the remedy, including reports involving both oil-change and engine-replacement remedies. The listed population was 597,571 vehicles. These are opening-resume figures, not a failure rate or proof that the remedy failed. The resume recorded zero crashes, fires, injuries, or fatalities among those 36 reports; those counts apply to that set of reports at opening, not to all incidents or later reports. NHTSA recall information provides the public VIN lookup; the opening resume is the source for the inquiry figures.
Separately, a class-action complaint filed February 18, 2025, in Powell v. General Motors, No. 2:25-cv-10479, alleges bearing failures, sudden loss of power, and consumer-protection violations. A complaint states plaintiffs’ allegations; it is not a court finding. SlashGear reported that 11 suits were consolidated into Powell, but the current procedural status is not established here. Neither the complaint nor the NHTSA query by itself establishes wrongdoing or a failed remedy.
Which vehicles are covered?
GM’s recall filing identifies certain 2021–2024 model-year vehicles equipped with the L87 6.2L V8. The reported suspect engine production window is March 1, 2021, through May 31, 2024. That production window is not a substitute for checking a vehicle’s VIN: model year, make, and model alone do not establish that a specific vehicle is included.

What GM says may cause the engine failure
In its NHTSA filing, GM said connecting-rod and/or crankshaft components could have manufacturing defects that may cause engine damage or failure and loss of propulsion. GM described investigation findings that included rod-bearing damage associated with sediment and crankshafts outside dimensional or surface-finish specifications. These are the manufacturer’s reported findings, not a determination from NHTSA’s later inquiry.

GM’s filing states: “If the engine fails during vehicle operation, the vehicle will lose propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash.” The statement describes the safety consequence identified by the manufacturer; it does not establish that every affected vehicle will fail.
GM reported 28,102 U.S. field complaints or incidents potentially related to L87 crankshaft, connecting-rod, or bearing failure, including 14,332 reports alleging loss of propulsion. It also reported 12 potentially related alleged crashes and 12 potentially related alleged injuries, which GM characterized as minor or non-physical, with most not crash-related. These are GM’s figures in its 2025 recall filing for the period described there, not current NHTSA totals or confirmed defect-related outcomes.

What is the L87 engine recall fix?
The remedy in GM’s filing begins with an inspection. Depending on the result, a vehicle may receive engine repair or replacement; vehicles that pass inspection receive higher-viscosity oil. It is therefore not one universal oil change, and the applicable branch depends on the inspection and the vehicle.
The filing’s reference to 0W-40 full synthetic motor oil describes part of the official remedy. It is not a recommendation to buy oil or change it yourself as a substitute for recall service. Ask a GM dealer to confirm the remedy for your VIN and whether the recall has already been completed.

Can an engine fail after the recall repair?
NHTSA’s opening resume confirms that it received 36 owner questionnaires alleging post-remedy engine failures. It does not establish that the remedy caused those failures, that all reports involve the same circumstances, or that the same experience applies to all 597,571 vehicles listed in the query. The inquiry was opened to assess the adequacy of the remedy; the opening record alone does not establish its later status or outcome.
If your vehicle has symptoms or you are concerned about its safety, contact a GM dealer for instructions specific to your vehicle. Do not treat a product purchase or a self-directed oil change as a resolution of a safety recall.

How to check your VIN and next steps
- Find the 17-character VIN, typically visible through the windshield at the driver-side dashboard or on vehicle registration and insurance documents.
- Enter the VIN in NHTSA’s recall lookup and review any open recall results.
- If the L87 recall appears, contact a GM dealer to confirm the applicable inspection and remedy, and arrange service.
- Keep the service documentation and confirm with the dealer whether the recall remedy is recorded as complete.
A model-year match or an online discussion about another owner’s repair cannot determine whether a particular VIN is covered or which remedy branch applies.
