Amazon’s 2026 Capex Plan Tops Microsoft and Google’s, but It Isn’t an AWS-Only AI Budget

Amazon’s 2026 spending plan is larger than Microsoft’s and Alphabet’s reported expectations, but the figures do not compare AI-only or AWS-only investment.

Amazon expects to spend $220 billion on capital projects in 2026, more than Alphabet’s current $195 billion–$205 billion forecast and Microsoft’s roughly $190 billion expectation. But those are company-wide figures—not comparable budgets for AWS or AI alone. Amazon’s plan includes technology spending that is mostly AI-related, along with investment in robots, semiconductors and satellites.

Is Amazon really spending more on AI than Microsoft and Google?

On the latest reported company-wide plans, Amazon is set to spend more in 2026. The Associated Press reported the Amazon and Alphabet figures on July 30, 2026; Microsoft’s July 29 results said its calendar-year expectation remained unchanged in substance after an accounting change.

Company 2026 capex expectation What the figure covers
Amazon $220 billion Total company capital spending. AP described the technology portion as mostly AI-related, with spending also on robots, semiconductors and satellites. It is not an AWS-only amount.
Alphabet (Google) $195 billion–$205 billion Full-year 2026 capex outlook, raised from $180 billion–$190 billion, as reported by AP.
Microsoft About $190 billion Calendar-year expectation cited on Microsoft’s April 29, 2026 earnings call; it included roughly $25 billion attributed to higher component prices. Microsoft said in July that the expectation was unchanged in substance after an accounting change.

These are plans and expectations, not final 2026 spending totals. They also use different reporting contexts and do not isolate AI infrastructure on a consistent basis. The comparison supports saying Amazon’s company-wide plan is larger; it does not establish that AWS alone will spend more on AI than Microsoft or Google Cloud. AP’s July 30 report, Microsoft’s Q3 FY2026 earnings call and its July 29 results describe the respective figures.

How much is AWS spending on AI infrastructure?

The cited disclosures do not give a comparable dollar total for AWS-only AI infrastructure spending in 2026. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy discussed AWS capex separately in his 2025 shareholder letter, published in 2026, but did not state a standalone AWS dollar amount. He said that much of the AWS capex expected in 2026 would be monetized in 2027–2028 and that a substantial portion already had customer commitments. That is management’s account of expected timing and demand, not a quantified AWS budget or guarantee of returns. Read Jassy’s shareholder letter.

AWS demand and announced capacity

Amazon reported AWS second-quarter 2026 sales of $42.2 billion, up 37% year over year, and said its AWS AI business had passed a $25 billion annual revenue run rate. Those company-reported measures indicate demand and business scale; they do not show how much AWS will spend specifically on AI or whether the investment will earn an attractive return. Amazon’s second-quarter results also reported trailing-12-month free cash flow of negative $7.6 billion through June 30, 2026, with the decline driven primarily by higher property-and-equipment purchases that primarily reflected AI investment.

AWS and NVIDIA announced on August 26, 2026, a plan to deploy two million additional NVIDIA GPUs across AWS’s global infrastructure in 2027–2028. This is a deployment plan measured in GPUs, not a disclosed dollar amount of capex. The announcement quotes AWS CEO Matt Garman saying customers want flexibility in AI tools and confidence that they work together.

Will Amazon’s AI infrastructure investment pay off?

The available figures show substantial spending plans and signs of customer demand, but they do not establish the investment’s eventual profitability. Amazon’s AWS sales growth and reported AI-business run rate are relevant signals, while the company’s negative trailing-12-month free cash flow shows the scale of cash pressure amid equipment investment. Neither proves what returns the new infrastructure will generate.

Timing matters, too: Jassy’s estimate that much of the 2026 AWS capex would be monetized in 2027–2028 places the expected payoff after the spending period. Amazon also says a substantial portion already has customer commitments, but that remains management’s forward-looking statement. The cited disclosures do not provide a standardized comparison of AI-only capex or realized AI-specific returns across Amazon, Microsoft and Alphabet.

What the comparison means for cloud customers and investors

A bigger company-wide capex plan is not, by itself, proof of a larger AWS AI budget or superior returns. Amazon’s figure bundles infrastructure and other investment categories; Microsoft’s expectation includes a stated hardware-price effect, and Alphabet’s is a separate company forecast. For customers, the AWS GPU announcement indicates planned capacity expansion, while the financial disclosures speak to spending and demand rather than a guarantee of availability for any particular workload. For investors, the key distinction is between management’s planned investment and evidence of monetized demand or returns.

Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in the company’s July 22, 2026 results that Google Cloud revenue grew 82% year over year in Q2, driven by demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions. That provides context on a competitor’s reported cloud demand, but does not make the providers’ capex figures directly comparable. Alphabet’s Q2 results contain the statement and its full-year outlook.
