When and why did Gates testify?
Gates gave a transcribed interview to the U.S. House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on June 10, 2026. The committee said the interview was part of its review of federal investigations into Jeffrey Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell; the transcript was made public 13 days later.
This was a closed-door interview, not an on-camera hearing. The contemporaneous Washington Post report said the session was not recorded on camera. The available primary record identified here is the written transcript, not an official video.

What does the transcript say?
In his opening statement, Gates said he had been introduced to Epstein in 2011 through people he trusted, that discussions involved potential philanthropic giving, and that their interactions ended in December 2014. These are Gates’s statements in the interview, not independent findings. He also said: “I should never have met with Epstein in the first place.”
The transcript records the interview in spoken question-and-answer form. Its ground rules explain that a court reporter was making a written record, ask participants to answer audibly because nonverbal responses cannot be captured, and set out alternating questioning rounds.

What has the committee said about wrongdoing?
The Washington Post reported that committee chairman James Comer said the committee wanted to understand the full scope of Gates’s relationship with Epstein and Ghislaine Maxwell. The newspaper quoted Comer as saying: “No one’s accusing Bill Gates of any wrongdoing, and I certainly appreciate him coming in voluntarily.” That is Comer’s statement as reported by the newspaper, not a formal committee finding.
References to Gates’s contact with Epstein do not, by themselves, establish wrongdoing. The Washington Post also reported that draft notes or emails attributed to Epstein contained unverified personal claims about Gates, which Gates denied. Those reported claims should not be treated as established facts; consult the transcript for Gates’s answers in their question-and-answer context.
