Microsoft’s laser-free cable technology could reduce the power used by some data-center network links, but there is no evidence yet that it has cut customers’ electricity bills. The system is a prototype optical interconnect built around MicroLEDs and imaging fiber—not a consumer cable—and the reported savings are link-level estimates, not measured whole-data-center bill reductions.
What is Microsoft’s laser-free cable technology?
Microsoft Research’s Cambridge lab developed a data-center optical link that uses commercially available MicroLEDs in place of lasers. Lenses direct the light through multicore imaging fiber, while a low-power analog backend handles the signal. The peer-reviewed MOSAIC paper describes the approach as “wide-and-slow”: it uses many parallel optical channels, each carrying data at a lower rate, rather than relying on a small number of very fast channels. Microsoft’s March 2026 report and the MOSAIC paper, published for ACM SIGCOMM 2025, describe a data-center technology, not a retail cable.
Imaging fiber’s many cores let the system carry numerous channels in one cable. That is the key to the design: distribute traffic across parallel paths instead of pushing every bit through a few channels at very high speed.
How much power could it save?
The MOSAIC authors report an estimated 56–68% lower link power than mainstream optical links in their comparison, depending on configuration. Microsoft’s March 2026 report gives a broader expectation of about 50% less energy than mainstream laser-based optical cables, based on lab tests and estimates of deployment performance. These figures describe network-link energy; neither source reports a measured reduction in a data center’s total electricity bill after deployment.

- Optical digital audio cable: Perfect for equipment with a TOSLINK interface (OPT In / OPT Out or S/PDIF In / S/PDIF Out). TOSLINK connector to TOSLINK connector (F05 connector)
- Versatile: Ideal for transmitting crystal-clear digital audio from your TV, video game console (PS3/PS4/Xbox One), DVD/Blu-ray player, or TV streaming box to a soundbar, amplifier/amp, stereo/Hi-Fi system, D/A converter, and more
- High-End: This metal-free fiber optic audio cable, featuring a fully flexible PVC jacket, is entirely immune to electrical interference. Each cable undergoes multi-stage testing during manufacturing to ensure maximum product quality and durability
- 24K gold-plated connectors: Corrosion resistant gold plating keeps connectors clean. And because these cables are fiber optic, they provide 100 % signal transmission with 0 % loss
- No risk: 36 months manufacturer warranty
That distinction matters for finance: a lower-power link does not translate directly into the same percentage reduction in a facility’s power bill. The sources do not quantify customer bill savings, and they do not establish how the technology would affect total facility consumption in an operating data center.
What has the prototype demonstrated?
The prototype results and the projected scale-up are different. The MOSAIC paper reports 100 optical channels transmitting 2 Gbps per channel over 20 meters, and 1.6 Gbps per channel over 30 meters. The paper also discusses reach up to 50 meters and aggregate capacity of 800 Gbps and beyond as scaling potential—not as the demonstrated end-to-end result of that prototype.

Microsoft’s report says conventional data-center connections use copper for shorter links and laser-based optical fiber for longer ones. It puts high-data-rate copper links at about two meters, while the MicroLED design is intended to span tens of meters. The MOSAIC authors compare copper links with reach under two meters and active optical cables with reach of tens of meters; they describe copper as low-power and reliable, and active optical cables as higher-power with higher failure rates. Their paper claims MOSAIC can offer more than ten times copper’s reach and 100 times the reliability of current optical links. Those are claims in the paper’s comparison, not independently established fleet-wide outcomes.
When might it reach data centers?
Microsoft reported a supplier proof of concept involving MediaTek and others, and said it expected commercialization with industry partners in late 2027. That was an expectation reported in March 2026, not confirmation of a product launch. The cited sources do not establish current commercial availability.

If the design reaches commercial deployment and performs as estimated, it could reduce the energy used by the links it replaces. But the evidence supports a possible improvement in networking efficiency—not a claim that Microsoft or its customers have already lowered AI data-center power bills by 50% or more. The eventual financial effect would depend on deployment and how much of a facility’s overall electricity use comes from eligible network links; the sources provide no bill-level estimate.
