Ford Raised Prices on Mexican-Made Cars in 2025—but Not the Full Tariff Cost

In May 2025, Ford raised prices on some newly built Mustang Mach-E, Maverick and Bronco Sport vehicles produced in Mexico. The increases reached as much as $2,000 on some models, but Ford said the changes combined routine mid-year pricing with tariff costs—and that it had not passed the full tariff cost on to customers. The report did not say that every trim rose by $2,000 or that Ford added the full tariff rate to each vehicle’s sticker price.

Which Ford models went up in price?

Reuters reported on May 7, 2025, that the price changes took effect May 2 and applied to three Mexico-produced models:

  • Mustang Mach-E electric SUV
  • Maverick pickup
  • Bronco Sport SUV

According to a dealer notice Reuters reviewed, increases reached up to $2,000 on some models. That is a reported maximum, not a uniform increase across every vehicle, trim or configuration. The report did not provide a complete trim-by-trim price list.

Did Ford pass the whole tariff cost on to buyers?

No. Ford’s spokesperson described the adjustment as its “usual” mid-year pricing actions “combined with some tariffs we are facing,” and said: “We have not passed on the full cost of tariffs to our customers.”

That statement does not quantify how much of the tariff cost was reflected in the affected prices. Nor does the reported increase of up to $2,000 measure tariff pass-through: Ford said the changes had more than one cause, and the coverage did not establish a per-vehicle tariff calculation.

Ford’s tariff-cost figures reported at the time were estimates, not final realized costs. Reuters reported an estimate of about $2.5 billion in 2025 tariff costs, with Ford expecting to reduce its exposure by around $1 billion. Ars Technica separately cited Ford’s first-quarter 2025 estimate of up to $1.5 billion. Those figures were reported at different points and may reflect different scopes; they should not be combined into one estimate or treated as the cost assigned to these three models.

Did the increase apply to vehicles already at a dealership?

The reports distinguished vehicles by build date. Ford told Reuters that the affected vehicles were built after May 2, 2025, and expected to reach dealer lots in late June. Ars Technica reported that Mach-Es, Bronco Sports and Mavericks already in inventory would not receive the increase.

Ars also reported that Ford planned to extend employee pricing to all customers through at least July 4, 2025, including on vehicles built after May 2. That was a temporary promotion reported in May 2025, not a current offer.

How do tariffs relate to a car’s sticker price?

A tariff rate is not automatically the same as a sticker-price increase. The 25% rate described in 2025 policy materials applied to covered imported automobiles or parts, subject to policy details, content rules, eligibility and offsets. It should not be read as a 25% increase on every vehicle’s MSRP—or as proof that Ford raised these models’ prices by that amount.

The 2025 White House fact sheet described offsets for some auto parts used in vehicles assembled in the United States: 3.75% of a manufacturer’s U.S. production MSRP for April 3, 2025 through April 30, 2026, and 2.5% for May 1, 2026 through April 30, 2027. Those provisions are policy context, not a direct rebate to shoppers and not a calculation of the price changes on Ford’s Mexico-produced models. The USITC’s 2025 report discusses USMCA automotive rules of origin and the offset framework, but neither source establishes Ford’s tariff liability for each vehicle or how it allocated costs among trims.

Does a U.S.-assembled car still contain imported parts?

It can. Final assembly location and the origin of a vehicle’s components are separate questions. A car assembled in the United States may contain imported parts, while trade rules and tariff treatment can depend on details such as parts sourcing, U.S. content and whether the vehicle qualifies under USMCA rules. A “made in America” description alone does not determine the tariff treatment of every part or vehicle.

For a shopper, the May 2025 Ford price report does not answer what a vehicle costs now. Compare the current model-year MSRP, trim and equipment, dealer inventory versus incoming builds, incentives and the date of the dealer’s written quote. A 2025 price change is not a reliable predictor of today’s transaction price.
