The best CD rate depends on the term you can accept, how much you can deposit, and when you may need the money. In the October 2026 comparisons, listed APYs reach 4.95%—above the 4.50% ceiling in the original headline—but that top offer is a five-year CD with a $10,000 minimum. A five-year Synchrony Bank CD is listed at 4.50% with no minimum, while BTG Pactual lists several shorter terms at rates from 4.45% to 4.55%. Rates can change, so confirm the issuer’s live APY, eligibility rules, and withdrawal terms before opening an account.
Best CD rates in the October 2026 comparisons
NerdWallet’s October 2026 overview reports a listed range of 3.75% to 4.95% APY, up from 3.75% to 4.50% in its September comparison. Bankrate’s October comparison lists the specific offers below. These are dated listings, not a guarantee that an issuer still offers the same rate today.
| Institution and source | Term | APY | Minimum opening deposit | Access and qualifications |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Popular Direct, as listed by Bankrate | 5 years | 4.95% | $10,000 | NerdWallet describes a five-year early-withdrawal penalty of two years of interest. Confirm the current disclosure and eligibility with the issuer. |

| BTG Pactual | 12 months | 4.45% | $500 | APY effective September 30, 2026; standard CDs are designed to be held to maturity. |

| BTG Pactual | 36, 48, or 60 months | 4.55% | $500 | APY effective September 30, 2026; standard CDs are designed to be held to maturity. |
Bankrate’s and NerdWallet’s figures are comparison listings; BTG Pactual’s figures come from its official rate page. The BTG Pactual rates are one bank’s offers, not a market-wide ranking. The listings do not establish identical eligibility, penalty terms, or customer conditions across institutions. Confirm the live offer and account-specific disclosures before you fund a CD.
How to choose between a high APY and a better-fitting CD
Match the term to when you need the money
A five-year CD may offer a higher APY than a shorter term, but it also ties up funds longer. Compare rates for the same term before comparing institutions, and avoid choosing a long lock-up for money you may need before maturity.

Check the opening minimum against your deposit
The 4.95% Popular Direct listing requires $10,000 to open, while the listed Synchrony five-year CD has no minimum and BTG Pactual’s listed standard CDs require $500. A rate is only useful if you meet its opening requirements and the account is available to you.
Read the early-withdrawal terms
BTG Pactual says, “CDs are designed to be held to maturity; early withdrawals may incur a penalty.” Its standard CD terms may reduce earnings if you withdraw early, and penalty details vary by account. NerdWallet reports a two-years-of-interest penalty for Popular Direct’s five-year CD. Verify the specific account disclosure rather than assuming every CD has the same penalty.

Do not treat a no-penalty CD as identical to a standard CD
BTG Pactual lists a separate 13-month no-penalty product with a $5,000 minimum. Its product details describe limited penalty-free withdrawals after an initial period and account-specific conditions. Check the rules, including when withdrawals become available and how many are permitted, before relying on that access.
Would a CD ladder help?
A CD ladder staggers deposits across CDs with different maturity dates, creating planned access points instead of having the entire balance mature at once. Associated Bank describes this approach as staggering several terms. A ladder can help coordinate maturity dates with expected expenses, but it does not guarantee a higher return. Each CD still has its own APY, minimum, maturity date, and early-withdrawal terms.

Check insurance, eligibility, and the live offer
BTG Pactual states that deposits are insured up to $250,000 per depositor, per insured bank, and that ownership categories can affect coverage. It also describes customer and funding conditions for the consumer APYs displayed on its page. Do not assume every account or balance has the same eligibility or insurance treatment; review the issuer’s current disclosures and confirm how your deposits are titled and aggregated.
