Short answer: Coupang publishes payment safeguards and offers passkey sign-in, but that does not make any online account risk-free. The company said its 2025 data incident affected accounts in Korea and that payment details and login credentials were not exposed. That is Coupang’s account of the incident, not an independent security finding, and it should not be generalized to every Coupang market or every period.
Is Coupang safe to use?
Coupang is a legitimate retail and payment service, and its published materials describe controls for payments, account access, and personal information. Those disclosures can help you understand how the company says it handles security; they are not an independent audit or proof that every transaction or account is risk-free. Your practical risk also depends on your sign-in setup, device security, and ability to recognize suspicious messages or orders.

Coupang’s Coupang Pay privacy notice describes payment and refund processing, registered payment methods, fraud prevention, and support handling. It lists categories including account, card, bank, mobile-payment, transaction, refund, access-log, IP, and device information. The notice also describes access controls, encryption for passwords and important data, encrypted transmission, and administrative and physical safeguards. These are company-disclosed practices, not independently verified assurances.
Is it safe to put my credit card on Coupang?
The available evidence does not establish that paying with a card is safer or less safe than using a bank, mobile-payment method, or Coupay Money. Coupang’s privacy notice says it processes payment-method and transaction information to provide payment services, prevent fraud, process refunds, and support customers. It does not provide a comparative security ranking of payment methods.

What happened in Coupang’s 2025 Korea data incident?
Coupang’s November 29, 2025 statement
In its November 29, 2025 statement, Coupang said it learned on November 18 of unauthorized access involving about 4,500 accounts, then expanded its estimate to about 33.7 million accounts in Korea. The company said names, email addresses, phone numbers, shipping addresses, and some order histories were exposed. It said payment details, credit card numbers, and login credentials were not included. Coupang also said it blocked the access route, increased monitoring, engaged an outside security firm, and warned customers about impersonation attempts.

Coupang’s December 25, 2025 update
In a later December 25 update, Coupang said data associated with 33 million accounts had been accessed, while data from about 3,000 accounts had been retained, including 2,609 building entrance codes. The company said the retained data was later deleted and not transmitted to others, citing the perpetrator’s sworn statements and forensic investigation. Those are Coupang’s reported findings; “accounts accessed” and “accounts whose data was retained” are different measures.
The statements concern Coupang accounts in Korea. They do not establish the scope of exposure for users in other markets. Coupang’s statements also said payment and login data were not accessed in this incident; treat that as the company’s description of the incident, rather than a blanket guarantee about all users, time periods, or services.

How do I secure my Coupang account?
Set up a passkey if it is available to you
Coupang’s passkey guide describes passkeys as passwordless sign-in using public/private key cryptography: the public key is stored on Coupang’s servers and the private key on the customer’s device. To add one, Coupang lists this app path:
- Open the Coupang app and go to My Account → Security and Sign-in → Add Passkey.
- Authenticate using your device’s biometric method or PIN.
- Keep your device’s screen lock enabled. Coupang lists iOS 16 or later, or Android 9 or later, as requirements, along with iCloud Keychain on iPhone or Google Password Manager on Android.
Coupang says passkeys usually transfer when you use the same Apple ID or Google Account with synchronization enabled. If you stop using a phone, erase it before handing it to someone else. A passkey is a useful sign-in option, not a guarantee against every way an account could be compromised.

Be cautious with messages and links
Coupang warned about communications impersonating the company after the Korea incident. Do not use an unsolicited message’s link to sign in or provide payment information. Open the Coupang app yourself or type the official website address into your browser, then check for account notices there.
Review payment settings and account activity
Periodically review saved payment methods and recent orders in your account. For an order you did not place, Coupang’s order and payment FAQ directs customers to its support channels. Reach support through the app or by navigating to Coupang’s official website yourself.

How does one-touch payment work, and can I turn it off?
Coupang’s July 15, 2026 payment FAQ says one-touch payment replaces the password-entry step with Coupang’s security checks for eligible orders. The company may still request an additional password check under its security criteria. One-touch payment is a convenience setting; it does not mean every order bypasses all checks.
To change the setting in the mobile app, use My Coupang → All Menus → Payment Methods → Payment Password and Security Settings → One-touch Payment, then switch it off if you prefer not to use it. The FAQ’s stated app route and availability apply to the service described in that FAQ; menus and access can vary by account or app version.
Can I check whether my information was exposed?
On April 20, 2026, Coupang announced an identity-verified lookup for customers to see individual exposure details, with availability stated through June 20, 2026. That announced period has passed. The notice does not establish whether a later lookup tool or process is available, so check Coupang’s current official support information rather than relying on the expired announcement: Coupang’s lookup notice.
