What counts as an eyelash growth serum?
The phrase can describe products with very different regulatory status and evidence. LATISSE is a prescription medicine indicated in the United States to treat eyelash hypotrichosis. Many nonprescription products are cosmetics intended to condition lashes, support their appearance, or help reduce breakage. Calling a product a serum—or selling it over the counter—does not establish that it grows lashes or has been evaluated to the same standard as a prescription drug.
A 2024 review concluded that bimatoprost has the strongest evidence for eyelash growth. The review found that other prostaglandin analogues need further safety study, while formal evidence for non-prostaglandin ingredients in eyelash use remains limited. Peptides, amino acids, castor oil, vitamins, and hyaluronic acid should not be presented as proven to reproduce bimatoprost’s clinical effect. What the evidence says about LATISSE
LATISSE contains bimatoprost 0.3 mg/mL. Its precise mechanism is not known; the product label says the effect is believed to involve increasing the proportion of hairs in the growth phase and the time they remain in that phase. In a randomized, vehicle-controlled, four-month study of 278 adults, 107 of 137 LATISSE users (78%) and 26 of 141 vehicle users (18%) had at least a one-grade improvement in eyelash prominence at week 16. Mean lash length increased by 1.4 mm (25%) with LATISSE and 0.1 mm (2%) with vehicle at week 16. These are results from the label-reported study, not a guarantee of an individual result.

The label reports that each of the most frequently listed reactions in the clinical study—eye itching, conjunctival redness, skin hyperpigmentation, ocular irritation, dry-eye symptoms, and redness around the eye—occurred in fewer than 4% of patients. Postmarketing reports include changes such as periorbital fat atrophy, deepening of the eyelid sulcus, eyelid drooping, skin discoloration, blurred vision, and eyelid swelling; voluntary reports do not establish how often these occur or prove causation. Increased brown iris pigmentation may be permanent. Consult the LATISSE label for its full clinical results and warnings.
How to apply LATISSE safely
- Use it once nightly, following the prescriber’s directions and the product label.
- Place one drop on the sterile applicator supplied for one eye, then apply it to the skin of the upper eyelid margin at the base of the lashes.
- Use a new sterile applicator for the other eye. Blot any excess solution and do not apply it to the lower lash line.
- Avoid letting the solution spread onto skin beyond the intended upper eyelid margin; unintended hair growth can occur where it contacts skin.
The label advises people using bimatoprost or another prostaglandin analogue for elevated intraocular pressure to consult their physician and be monitored, because LATISSE may interfere with the intended pressure reduction. Active intraocular inflammation and certain other risk factors also call for clinician review. Ask the prescriber or an eye-care clinician whether it is appropriate for you, especially if you have an eye condition or use pressure-lowering eye medicine.

How to assess an over-the-counter lash serum
- Check the current ingredient declaration. Products can change formulation; do not rely on an old roundup or retailer description.
- Distinguish conditioning from demonstrated growth. A product’s cosmetic purpose or marketing language is not clinical proof that it lengthens lashes.
- Follow the product’s current instructions. Do not assume that an OTC serum uses LATISSE’s application method or has the same safety profile.
- Take irritation seriously. The FDA advises checking ingredient declarations, stopping use if irritation occurs, and contacting a healthcare provider if irritation persists. Its general cosmetic guidance is not a clinical evaluation of each individual product. Read the FDA’s eye cosmetic safety guidance.
Women’s Health quoted facial plastic surgeon Jaimie DeRosa, MD, recommending that readers look for peptides and amino acids, vitamin E, and hydrating ingredients such as hyaluronic acid. That is her advice as reported by the magazine, not a clinical guideline or proof that those ingredients produce prescription-like growth.
