Yes—BYD overtook Tesla in 2025 when the comparison is battery-electric passenger-car sales: BYD sold 2,256,714, while Tesla delivered about 1.64 million vehicles, according to a contemporaneous report. The figures use different measures, so they establish the reported sales ranking, not a perfectly like-for-like count. BYD’s much larger total of more than 4.6 million “new energy vehicles” includes plug-in hybrids and should not be compared directly with Tesla’s battery-electric deliveries.
What the 2025 comparison shows
| Automaker | 2025 figure | What it counts | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD | 2,256,714 | Battery-electric passenger cars sold | electrive.com’s 2026 report on 2025 sales |
| Tesla | About 1.64 million | Vehicle deliveries | Contemporaneous secondary reporting, as cited by electrive.com; Tesla’s official release reports its fourth-quarter figure, not this full-year total. |
On those reported figures, BYD was ahead. But sales and deliveries are not identical measures: sales generally describe vehicles sold to customers, while deliveries count vehicles handed over. The comparison is useful for the broad annual ranking, but the difference in reporting measure is worth keeping in view.
Why BYD’s 4.6 million figure is not the comparison
BYD said it delivered more than 4.6 million New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) worldwide in 2025, with exports exceeding 1 million. That total covers both battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), making it a broader category than battery-electric passenger-car sales. BYD’s 2025 sales announcement supports the NEV and export totals; the BEV-only passenger-car figure above is reported separately by electrive.com.
For a meaningful automaker comparison, match the calendar year, vehicle category, geography and measure. A BEV sales count should not be set against a total that includes plug-in hybrids, nor should production be presented as sales or deliveries.

What the wider EV market adds to the picture
China was central to the market’s scale in 2025. The International Energy Agency says more than 13 million electric cars were sold there—around six in ten worldwide—and that EVs made up nearly 55% of new-car sales in China. The IEA’s “electric cars” grouping includes BEVs and PHEVs, so these market figures do not map exactly to BYD’s BEV-only sales count. The agency also says China’s EV sales growth was below 20% in 2025, after rapid expansion from 2020 through 2024. See the IEA’s 2026 electric-car market analysis.
Model-level popularity is not the same as a manufacturer’s total volume. The IEA estimates that five models together represented about one-fifth of global BEV sales in 2025: Tesla’s Model Y accounted for nearly 8% and Model 3 for 3.6%; Geely’s Geome Xingyuan accounted for 3.5%, Wuling’s HongGuang Mini for 3.1%, and BYD’s Seagull for 3.0%.

What Tesla’s quarterly release does—and does not—establish
Tesla reported more than 418,000 vehicle deliveries in the fourth quarter of 2025 in its January 2, 2026 company release. The quarterly figure is official; the roughly 1.64 million full-year comparison above comes from contemporaneous secondary reporting rather than that release.
Tesla also cautioned that deliveries are only one measure of its performance and “should not be relied on as an indicator of quarterly financial results.” The company pointed to factors including average selling price, cost of sales and foreign-exchange movements. That distinction matters to investors and readers: vehicle volume alone does not show revenue, profitability or market value.

How to read claims that one automaker is “largest”
“World’s largest EV maker” depends on what is being counted. A headline may refer to BEV passenger-car sales, all plug-in vehicles, deliveries, production, revenue or market capitalization; those measures can produce different rankings. For this 2025 claim, the defensible reading is that BYD’s reported battery-electric passenger-car sales exceeded Tesla’s reported vehicle deliveries—not that BYD’s 4.6 million NEVs were all battery-electric cars or that any single volume metric proves which company is financially stronger.
