Cracker Barrel’s 2025 New Look: Why Fans Objected—and What Changed

Cracker Barrel’s 2025 refresh went beyond a simplified logo, but criticism followed. The company restored its Old Timer mark and suspended remodel plans.

Cracker Barrel’s 2025 refresh proposed more than a new logo: it also included updated restaurant interiors and changes to food and retail experiences. The simplified wordmark drew visible criticism online, even as CEO Julie Felss Masino said feedback she had heard was “overwhelmingly positive.” The company later restored its familiar “Old Timer” logo and suspended the remodel plans.

What did Cracker Barrel’s proposed new look change?

In a March 3, 2025 announcement, Cracker Barrel described a broader refresh spanning visual identity, restaurant spaces, food and retail offerings. The company said the effort was part of a strategic transformation launched in May 2024, covering brand identity, menu and pricing, store execution and retail, digital capabilities, and employee experience. It said the aim was to connect with loyal and new guests while preserving the brand’s heritage. The announcement described a footprint of approximately 660 company-owned Cracker Barrel Old Country Store locations in 43 states. Cracker Barrel’s announcement introduced the effort as an evolution rather than a break with the past.

The logo proposal

The proposed mark was a simplified dark-brown wordmark on a gold background. It removed the illustration of Uncle Herschel leaning on a barrel and the “Old Country Store” wording. The Associated Press reported that the company called it the fifth evolution of its logo and said the design drew on the barrel shape and wordmark. For a chain named after a country store, removing both a recognizable character and an explicit description of the store changed more than the amount of detail in the artwork. The AP’s August 2025 report described the proposed design and reaction.

The restaurant and brand experience

The wider proposal included lighter paint and more contemporary furniture in place of some of the older, antique-filled interiors. It also formed part of a plan affecting menus, retail and other guest experiences—not a logo-only exercise. That scope matters: a customer could welcome a refreshed menu or clearer visual identity while still preferring the familiar atmosphere of the dining room.

Why were reactions divided?

The criticism focused in part on losing visual cues many customers associated with Cracker Barrel: the barrel, Uncle Herschel and the “Old Country Store” identity. ABC News quoted Instagram comments including “Bring back the old logo” and “at least leave the barrel in the logo!!” These are examples of online comments, not a representative poll or a measurement of how all customers felt. ABC News’ interview with Masino reported both the comments and her response.

The company’s stated case for the change was that the brown-and-gold treatment and barrel shape retained a connection to the past while making the brand feel relevant to current and future guests. Some commenters evidently saw the simplified treatment differently: as a loss of distinctive heritage rather than a modern expression of it. That is a disagreement about what makes the brand recognizable and valuable, not an objectively settled design question.

The CEO’s public account also differed from the most visible criticism. In an August 19 interview, Masino said, “People like what we’re doing,” and described the feedback she had heard as “overwhelmingly positive.” ABC reported that she also said managers asked how they could get their restaurants remodeled. Those are statements from the company’s chief executive, not independent consumer-research findings. Public figures and political commentators helped make the debate more politically charged, but the documented objections also included direct complaints about the logo and modernization; they should not all be reduced to partisan motives.

What happened to the logo and remodel plans?

August 26, 2025: the old logo returned

On August 26, Cracker Barrel said it was restoring its previous “Old Timer” logo. The company statement quoted by the Los Angeles Times said: “We thank our guests for sharing your voices and love for Cracker Barrel. Our new logo is going away and our ‘Old Timer’ will remain.” The newspaper reported that the reversal followed public criticism. The Los Angeles Times report covered the announcement and noted that Uncle Herschel would remain on items sold in the stores.

September 9, 2025: remodels were suspended

Cracker Barrel then announced it was suspending remodels. The Guardian reported that the proposed interior design had been tested in four of the chain’s roughly 660 locations. The company said it had heard “clearly that the modern remodel design does not reflect what you love about Cracker Barrel.” It cited rocking chairs, fireplaces, peg games, gift-shop treasures and antiques as familiar features it would retain. The Guardian’s September 9 report covered the suspension.

The reported suspension is the latest outcome established here. It does not mean every restaurant had been remodeled, nor does it establish whether every part of the broader refresh has since restarted or been permanently abandoned.

How to read the business context

The redesign debate unfolded against business concerns, but the available figures do not show that the proposed logo or interiors caused sales results. The Los Angeles Times reported that in fiscal 2024 same-store sales fell 0.1% despite a 4.9% menu-price increase, while same-store retail sales fell 5.5%. Those figures predate the 2025 refresh and provide context only; they cannot establish its effect.

In the same ABC interview, Masino said the average check was about $15, compared with an industry figure of $27. Both figures are her quoted comparison, not independently verified benchmarks. The company’s stated strategy addressed multiple parts of the business, so it would be misleading to treat the logo controversy as an explanation for broader financial performance.

What the reversal tells customers

Cracker Barrel ultimately reversed the two most visible parts of the proposal: it restored the familiar logo and paused the tested interior remodels after guest feedback. The episode illustrates a tension the company had to manage: making the brand feel current without weakening the heritage cues and in-store atmosphere customers associate with it. The chronology shows what the company changed and then rolled back; it does not establish how every customer viewed the proposal or what the long-term business impact was.
