The option became available on November 27, 2024, so it is not a new 2026 change. For eligible U.S. Tesla Lease Trust customers, the process starts with a personalized estimate in the Tesla app. Your signed lease, lessor, location and quote determine whether you can buy and what it will cost.
Who can buy a leased Tesla?
Tesla says a lease-end purchase may be available for vehicles leased through Tesla Lease Trust, subject to the purchase option in the lease agreement. Tesla’s U.S. guidance lists Iowa and Louisiana as ineligible. State rules and individual contract terms can affect eligibility, so this process should not be assumed to apply outside the United States.
If your lease is with a third-party lessor, contact that company: its purchase options and process may differ. Tesla’s lease-end FAQ says, “Starting November 27, 2024, you can purchase your leased vehicle.” That date marks the start of the option, not a newly announced 2026 policy. Tesla lease-end options
How to request a Tesla Lease Trust buyout
- In the Tesla app, open Financing → Lease Details → Manage Lease → Purchase Vehicle.
- Request an estimate. Tesla asks for the vehicle’s registration address and title assignment information.
- Review the estimate and its good-through date. If you decide to proceed, confirm the purchase in the app; Tesla will prepare a purchase packet.
- Have every party named on the lease sign the packet. Complete a vehicle inspection if local rules require one.
- Pay the full amount stated in the estimate by its good-through date, following the packet’s payment instructions.
- After Tesla reviews the paperwork and payment, it mails the ownership transfer documents.
App labels and steps can change, so follow the current in-app instructions and Tesla’s lease-end guidance.

What does the buyout cost?
There is no single buyout price to apply to every Tesla lease. Tesla directs customers to request an individualized estimate; do not assume the amount equals remaining monthly payments, the original residual value or the car’s current market value unless your contract or quote confirms that calculation.
Tesla’s U.S. lease-end guidance lists a purchase fee of up to $350, plus applicable local taxes and fees. The estimate has a good-through date, and Tesla requires payment of the full quoted amount by that date. Check the current estimate and your contract for the amount that applies to you. What if “Purchase Vehicle” does not appear in the app?
For a Tesla Lease Trust lease, first check your signed agreement for a purchase option. Tesla says that an agreement with a purchase option should show the feature in the app. If the agreement does not list one, contact Tesla at lease end to ask what options are available. If a third party owns the lease, contact that lessor instead. Tesla lease-end options

| Option | What to verify | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Purchase at lease end | Personalized estimate, purchase fee, taxes and other fees, payment deadline | Keeps the vehicle if the contract and lessor permit the purchase. |
| Return the vehicle | Return instructions and any mileage or end-of-lease charges | Under Tesla’s U.S. leasing guidance, excess mileage may cost $0.25 per mile over the contracted annual allowance. Eligible Tesla Lease Trust lessees may be able to buy additional mileage in the app, subject to restrictions. Tesla vehicle leasing |
| Request an extension | Account eligibility, extension terms and total cost | Tesla says eligible accounts that are current on payments may apply within three months of maturity for a one-time extension of up to six months. This is not a purchase. Tesla lease-end options |
| End the lease early | A separate early-termination quote and applicable charges | This is not the lease-end purchase process; Tesla calculates charges under separate rules, which vary. Tesla early termination |
For a useful comparison, include the buyout quote, purchase fee, taxes and fees; potential return charges; when payment is due; and whether keeping this particular car is important to you. Do not calculate a break-even point without the actual quote and reliable vehicle-value and financing inputs.
Early termination uses a different calculation
Tesla Lease Trust’s early-termination guidance says that with fewer than three months remaining, the customer pays the remaining lease balance plus end-of-term charges. With three or more months remaining, the customer pays the difference between the adjusted lease balance and the vehicle’s current market value. Quotes can change, and charges vary. Tesla says early-termination charges depend on lease terms, remaining duration, current vehicle value and applicable state rules, including property taxes. Tesla early termination

Ask before arranging a trade-in or dealer purchase
Tesla’s early-termination page says third-party dealerships are eligible to purchase leased vehicles through Tesla Lease Trust and directs customers to contact Tesla. Tesla’s trade-in guidance separately advises checking third-party lender restrictions before a trade-in. Confirm directly with the lessor and Tesla before relying on a dealer transaction. What to check before deciding
- Confirm who the lessor is and read the purchase terms in your signed agreement.
- Get the personalized estimate and note its payment deadline.
- Account for the purchase fee, local taxes and fees, and any return-related mileage exposure if you are comparing alternatives.
- Check whether every leaseholder can sign the purchase packet and whether local rules require an inspection.
- Use the lessor’s current instructions; Tesla’s Tesla Lease Trust process does not establish the terms of a third-party lease.
