Several models had median listing ranges above $20,000. Treat them as candidates to shop—not price guarantees—and verify the specific car’s history, condition, equipment and total cost.
What “under $20,000” meant in the 2025 market
Cars.com’s April 11, 2025 guide selected vehicles from model year 2013 or newer, considering IIHS overall safety scores, J.D. Power dependability marks and its editors’ judgment. Its price ranges came from used Cars.com listings analyzed in March 2025. These are median listing-price ranges, not sale prices, and local inventory, mileage, trim and condition can change what a buyer finds. The seven sedan families below are supported by that guide; they are not a ranked list or a guarantee that a suitable example will meet the budget.
The reliability evidence also has limits. J.D. Power’s 2025 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study measured problems reported by original owners of 2022 model-year vehicles after three years. Its sample was 34,175 owners, with fieldwork from August through November 2024; the industry average was 202 problems per 100 vehicles. The study named the 2022 Toyota Camry and Corolla as model-level dependability award recipients for Toyota Motor Corporation. Those results do not certify other model years or any individual used car. J.D. Power’s 2025 study describes the broader findings, while its ratings methodology explains how annual ratings measure problems experienced in the prior 12 months.
Seven sedan families supported by 2025 listing data
Cars.com’s combined listing ranges include different years, trims or body styles within each family. MPG figures are reported combined ranges, not a promise of real-world fuel economy for every version. Confirm the exact year and powertrain before comparing cars.

Two additional candidates, with a price-date caveat
Mazda3 sedan
Consumer Reports’ 2026 buying-guide search-result extract identifies above-average reliability for some Mazda3 model years, but does not establish a 2025 asking price. IIHS and Consumer Reports’ teen-vehicle guide lists 2020–25 Mazda3 sedans and gives a $13,200 median retail price for the earliest applicable model year, using Black Book data from April 2026. That later figure is not evidence of what one cost in 2025. The guide is useful for current safety-screened shopping, not for backdating a price. Subaru Legacy
Consumer Reports’ extract similarly lists above-average reliability for certain Legacy years without establishing 2025 pricing. The IIHS/Consumer Reports guide lists 2020–25 Legacy models and an April 2026 Black Book median retail price of $16,500 for the earliest applicable year. Check the exact year’s reliability information and actual local listing; the 2026 median cannot establish a 2025 budget fit. A lower listing price is only one part of affordability. Compare candidates against the way you will use the car, and judge the specific vehicle rather than relying on a model’s reputation.

- Set a total-cost ceiling. Compare the asking price plus fees, taxes, insurance and any immediate maintenance—not just the advertised price.
- Match the configuration to your needs. Check model year, trim, mileage, passenger and cargo space, and whether a gasoline or hybrid powertrain suits your driving. EPA-style combined MPG figures are estimates, not a guarantee of your results.
- Inspect the individual vehicle’s record. Review maintenance and ownership history, title status and accident history. Have an independent mechanic inspect condition; a history report or diagnostic-code reader is not a substitute.
- Check safety equipment on the exact car. Awards can depend on headlights or other equipment, and equipment can vary within a model year. IIHS notes that a vehicle’s driver-door certification label can establish its build date when production-date exceptions matter.
- Check recalls by VIN or plate. IIHS recommends checking for outstanding recalls before buying. Resolve open recalls with the appropriate dealer or manufacturer.
- For a hybrid, assess the battery and warranty. Ask for vehicle-specific battery condition information and confirm what coverage, if any, remains for that particular vehicle.
IIHS and Consumer Reports’ used-vehicle recommendations apply a safety-screening approach that includes vehicle weight, IIHS driver-side small-overlap results, Consumer Reports braking, handling and usability scores, and additional pedestrian crash-prevention and headlight performance criteria for “Best Choices.” Their prices are later April 2026 Black Book medians for all trims of the earliest applicable model year, not a 2025 price database. These criteria can inform a current safety comparison but should not be mistaken for a guarantee about a specific car.
