CoinGecko’s global trending list is based on coins searched most often during the previous three hours, not on which assets gained the most or are best to buy. On the global page retrieved on 4 October 2026, NEAR Protocol, Grass and Sui led the list. CoinGecko’s separate US page used a regional popularity ranking and named Bitcoin first when last updated on 4 October 2026. These are time-stamped attention snapshots, not investment recommendations.
Which crypto is trending now?
It depends on the page’s geography, definition and update time. CoinGecko’s global trending page says it sorts coins by searches in the past three hours. The retrieved global list showed NEAR Protocol, Grass and Sui in its top three. Its separate US trending page describes a regional popularity ranking; its 4 October 2026 update named Bitcoin first, followed in the visible rows by XRP, Quant and Ethereum.
The two lists are not contradictory: they cover different scopes and describe their ranking criteria differently. Both can change quickly, so check the page and timestamp before relying on a rank. “Trending” identifies attention under that page’s method; it does not tell you whether a coin is rising, liquid, safe or suitable for your finances.
What the trending list does—and does not—tell you
It is an attention signal
On CoinGecko’s global page, the stated window is the past three hours. A coin may attract searches while its price is falling, rising or barely moving. In the retrieved global snapshot, NEAR Protocol was up 6.9% over 24 hours and Sui was up 4.3%, but those price changes are separate observations from the search-based ranking. They are dated figures, not current quotes.

It is not a buy signal
A high rank does not establish a project’s fundamentals, future returns, trading safety or fit with your risk tolerance. Short-lived attention can change before you act. Treat a trending page as a starting point for investigation, not a reason by itself to buy or sell.
How to compare trending coins more carefully
Do not collapse several different measures into a single “best crypto” judgment. Compare like with like, using matching time intervals and the same geographic scope where possible.

- Ranking scope and method: Check whether a page measures searches, regional popularity or something else, and note its time window and update date.
- Price movement: Compare percentage changes over the same period, such as 24 hours. A trending rank is not a price-performance ranking.
- Market capitalization and circulating supply: CoinGecko defines market capitalization as current price multiplied by circulating supply. Its methodology says supply information comes from project teams and is verified by CoinGecko; where it cannot verify supply, it may be marked unavailable. Market cap therefore depends on a supply estimate and is not the amount of cash invested in a coin.
- Reported volume and order-book depth: Volume is reported trading activity, not proof that you can buy or sell a desired amount at a fair price. CoinGecko notes that exchanges may artificially inflate reported volume. Its Trust Score methodology considers liquidity, cybersecurity and other factors.
- Venue availability and conditions: Before considering a trade, check whether reputable venues serve your location and compare rates, order-book depth and volume. CoinGecko’s US page points readers to those dimensions; access and conditions can vary by venue and jurisdiction.
CoinGecko says it aggregates exchange tickers and filters anomalous prices before calculating a volume-weighted average price. That method helps describe how its displayed market price is formed, but it does not guarantee the price or liquidity available on a particular exchange at the moment you trade.

Rank, price, market cap and volume answer different questions, and each can move or be calculated from inputs that deserve scrutiny. For example, a market-cap figure uses circulating supply, while a volume figure depends on exchange-reported activity. A list’s rank adds another layer: it reflects the source’s chosen attention measure and time window. Read each field on its own terms rather than treating the whole page as a scorecard.

If you decide to hold crypto, custody is a separate decision from which asset is trending. Ledger describes hardware signers as keeping private keys offline and requiring transaction confirmation on the device; see its hardware-wallet overview and self-custody information. These are vendor descriptions, not an independent assessment of a particular product or a claim that any one method is safest for everyone.
