Re:

The Richest Australian Cricket Players: How They Build Their Fortunes

Public sources document important Australian cricket earnings streams, but they do not establish a reliable ranking of players’ personal net worth.

There is no dependable public ranking of the richest Australian cricket players: the available sources do not establish comparable, independently verified personal net worth figures. What they do show is how leading players can earn substantial sums through national and state cricket, match fees, domestic and overseas leagues, and commercial work. Those earnings are not the same as wealth after tax, spending, investments, assets and liabilities.

Can we identify Australia’s richest cricket players?

Not reliably from the public evidence available here. A net worth ranking would need comparable valuation dates, a transparent method and credible information about each player’s assets and debts. The sources cited below do not provide that. Precise figures published by sports websites should therefore be treated as estimates, not verified personal balance sheets.

There is a useful distinction between three measures: annual remuneration is what a player earns over a period; career earnings accumulate income across seasons; net worth is the value of assets minus liabilities at a particular time. A salary or reported annual earnings figure cannot establish either career earnings or net worth on its own.

What public figures tell us about cricket income

The clearest figures are historical benchmarks from Cricket Australia’s 2023–24 agreement coverage, not current pay rates or amounts received by every player. They describe different populations and income categories, so they should not be combined into a single ranking.

About $54,000 average retainer WBBL players Agreement-era average reported in 2023; not a figure for every player or a current rate. Cricket Australia / cricket.com.au, 2023
$151,019 average annual income Domestic players appearing in both WNCL and WBBL under the new agreement Applies to the dual-format group described in the 2023 report, not all domestic players. Cricket Australia / cricket.com.au, 2023
More than $800,000 potential annual earnings A top CA-contracted woman with a WBBL deal Stated earning potential under the 2023 agreement context, with further opportunities possible from overseas leagues; it is not net worth or a guaranteed payment. Cricket Victoria, 2023

Cricket Australia’s 1 April 2026 announcement offered national contracts for 2026–27 to 21 men. The governing MOU provides for 20 to 24 male players to be contracted at the start of a contract year, but the announcement did not disclose individual contract values. It identifies contracted players, not who is richest. Cricket Australia, 1 April 2026

How Australian cricketers build their fortunes

National and state contracts, plus match fees

Retainers provide a base for contracted players, while match fees and other payments can add to income. The 2023–24 average for nationally contracted men is a historical benchmark; it does not reveal any particular player’s retainer. State contracts are another potential source, but the sources cited here do not set out comparable individual state payments.

Domestic T20 leagues

BBL and WBBL contracts can add domestic league income. The reported BBL pool and top-player earnings show the scale of one agreement year, not what each player took home. Selection, contract terms and the season all affect an individual’s earnings.

Overseas franchise competitions

Players selected by overseas franchises may earn additional income through competitions such as India’s Women’s Premier League (WPL) and the UK’s The Hundred. Cricket Victoria’s 2023 agreement summary described these as further opportunities for leading women, beyond the potential associated with a Cricket Australia contract and WBBL deal. Eligibility, selection, availability and competing commitments mean those opportunities are not universal.

Marketing and commercial payments

Marketing payments can contribute to player earnings, but the cited reliable sources do not provide a complete player-by-player endorsement ledger. Without a named, dated disclosure, it is not possible to assign a particular fortune or sponsor total to an endorsement deal.

Career length and what happens to earnings

A longer career may create more seasons in which to earn, but career duration alone says nothing definitive about current wealth. Gross remuneration is not the same as money retained: taxes, expenses, investments and liabilities all matter, and those personal details are not established by the public contract figures above.

What reported earnings estimates say about named players

ABC reported in March 2024 annual earnings estimates of up to $3 million for Pat Cummins, including Cricket Australia earnings, and up to $1 million for Alyssa Healy, including WBBL, WPL and The Hundred commitments. These are media-reported estimates of annual earnings, not verified net worth figures; they are not necessarily guaranteed or recurring contract payments. ABC, March 2024

Those estimates are useful context for the range of income streams a top player may have, but they cannot be compared directly with a season’s contract value or an online net-worth estimate. A January 2026 Surprise Sports article printed precise net-worth estimates, but the cited material does not establish its valuation method or independent verification. It is evidence that estimates circulate, not a sound basis for a factual richest-player order. Surprise Sports, January 2026

How to judge a cricket wealth claim

Before treating a published number as a player’s fortune, check what it actually measures:

  • Evidence: Is it an official contract disclosure, an attributed media estimate, or an unexplained net-worth claim?
  • Period: Does it cover a season, a year, a career, or a valuation date?
  • Currency and basis: Is the currency identified, and is the number gross, net or unspecified?
  • Income source: Does it include a national or state contract, match fees, domestic or overseas leagues, or commercial payments?
  • Comparability: Are the same methods used for every player? If not, the figures do not support a fair ranking.

Cricket Australia chief executive Nick Hockley said in Cricket Victoria’s 3 April 2023 MOU report: “Cricket now clearly offers the best earning opportunities of any team sport for elite female sportspeople.” That is his statement about earning opportunities under the agreement, not an independently tested comparison or a claim about personal net worth. Cricket Victoria, 3 April 2023
