How Often Do Teslas Catch Fire or Get Into Accidents? What the Data Shows

Tesla’s fire report gives a global estimate for 2012–2024, but there is no directly comparable independent Tesla-wide accident rate in the cited sources.

Tesla’s latest fire report estimates that, worldwide from 2012 through 2024, one Tesla vehicle fire event occurred for about every 140 million miles traveled. Tesla cites a U.S. comparison of one vehicle fire per 17 million miles, but the two figures use different counting scopes. For accidents, there is no single independently comparable Tesla-wide rate in the sources available: Tesla reports telemetry-based collision measures, while government automation-crash reports are not adjusted for miles driven.

How often do Teslas catch fire?

Tesla’s Vehicle Fire Data report says its global fleet data recorded approximately one Tesla vehicle fire event per 140 million vehicle miles traveled between 2012 and 2024. That is Tesla’s published estimate, not an independently audited rate.

Tesla cites NFPA and U.S. Department of Transportation data for a U.S. comparison of one vehicle fire per 17 million miles. Tesla also notes an important difference in what gets counted: its fire data includes events caused by structure fires, wildfires, arson, and other causes unrelated to the vehicle, while the NFPA comparison excludes fires where a structure is involved. The figures therefore are not a strictly like-for-like comparison, and the comparison should not be read as a direct measure of relative fire risk.

How often do Teslas get into accidents?

There is no single all-Tesla accident frequency in the cited sources that can be directly compared with the fire rate. The answer depends on what counts as an accident—any collision, a major collision, an airbag deployment, a fatal crash, or a crash involving a driver-assistance system—and on whether the figure is divided by miles traveled, fleet size, or neither.

  • DOES NOT EXPIRE: Unlike traditional extinguishers, the fire blanket never expires. That means unlike traditional fire extinguishers, it doesn’t need to be replaced.

Tesla’s Vehicle Safety Report uses vehicle telemetry to calculate collision measures and compares telemetry-derived rates with manually driven Tesla vehicles. Its methodology also estimates a U.S. baseline using Federal Highway Administration vehicle-miles-traveled data and NHTSA incident counts. Tesla acknowledges that differences in criteria and unavoidable assumptions can introduce noise or bias. Those methods describe Tesla’s analysis; they do not supply an independently established, fleet-wide rate that settles how often Teslas of all models and years have accidents.

What Tesla counts as an FSD-related collision

Tesla says it reports collisions regardless of who or what contributed and does not assign fault. If Full Self-Driving (Supervised) was active at any point during the five seconds before a collision, Tesla counts it as an FSD-engaged collision. That is an attribution rule for the report, not a finding that FSD caused the crash or that the driver was at fault.

The telemetry has limits. Tesla says cellular connectivity problems or damage to communication systems may affect whether an event is captured, and that injury information is not consistently supplied or accessible to the company. Its reported collision measures should be understood in light of those limits.

Why government crash totals do not establish a Tesla accident rate

NHTSA’s Standing General Order database tracks reports of certain crashes involving automated driving systems or Level 2 driver-assistance systems. NHTSA cautions that these reports are not adjusted for fleet size or distance traveled, may be incomplete or unverified, and should not be assumed statistically representative of all crashes. Differences in manufacturers’ ability to learn about and report crashes may also affect the totals. A raw count from this database cannot show whether one brand has a higher or lower per-mile crash risk.

How to read the figures fairly

  • Check the period and geography. The fire estimate covers Tesla’s global fleet from 2012 through 2024; the cited comparison is for U.S. vehicles.
  • Check the event definition. A fire event, any collision, a serious collision, an airbag deployment, a fatal crash, and an automation-related incident are different outcomes.
  • Check the denominator. A rate per miles traveled is not comparable to a raw incident total or a count divided only by fleet size.
  • Separate occurrence from responsibility. A collision recorded while a driver-assistance feature was active does not, by itself, establish cause or fault.
