Whether you can cancel a money order depends on who issued it and whether it has been cashed. USPS does not stop payment on postal money orders; it investigates a lost or stolen order and can issue a replacement if it confirms the loss. MoneyGram and Western Union offer refund processes for eligible orders that remain uncashed or unpresented. Identify the issuer, check the order’s status, and keep the receipt before you request anything.
Can you cancel a money order?
There is no single cancellation process. For a USPS postal money order, you cannot stop payment; a lost or stolen one may be replaced after USPS investigates. MoneyGram and Western Union describe refunds for orders that have not been cashed or presented, subject to their respective requirements and fees. If the order was already cashed, these uncashed-order refund routes do not apply.
Start by checking the issuer printed on the order. Then determine whether it is cashed, still uncashed, or of unknown status, and whether it is lost, stolen, damaged, or simply delayed in the mail.
What to do before requesting a replacement or refund
- Identify the issuer. The procedures below are different for USPS, MoneyGram, and Western Union.
- Find the receipt and record the details. Note the serial or money order number and exact amount. Keep a copy of the receipt and any request forms. USPS says the receipt helps track payment and provides proof of value if an order is lost, stolen, or damaged.
- Check the status through the issuer. USPS’s Money Orders Application requires the serial number, Post Office number, and dollar amount. MoneyGram’s status check uses the money order number and exact amount. Check before seeking a refund or replacement.
- Account for delivery time. MoneyGram says an order mailed less than two weeks ago may still be in transit. A delay alone does not establish that it is lost.
- Confirm current requirements and costs. Fees and processing estimates differ by issuer and can change. Check the issuer’s current instructions before submitting a request.
USPS: replace a lost, stolen, or damaged postal money order
Lost or stolen domestic money order
USPS says customers cannot stop payment on postal money orders. Take the receipt to any Post Office and ask a retail associate to start a Money Order Inquiry. USPS says it may take up to 30 days to confirm that an order was lost or stolen, and the investigation may take up to 60 days. If USPS confirms the loss or theft, it issues a replacement. The current USPS page states a $23 processing fee for this route. After starting an inquiry, you can check inquiry and order status through the USPS Money Orders Application. For current directions, see the USPS Money Orders page.

Damaged or spoiled postal money order
Take a damaged USPS money order and its receipt to a local Post Office. A narrower no-charge replacement rule applies when an order was defective or spoiled during imprinting or customer completion: the USPS Domestic Mail Manual says the customer must return both the negotiable portion and the matching receipt. This rule is for defective or spoiled orders; it should not be confused with the fee-based lost-or-stolen inquiry. See USPS Domestic Mail Manual, section 509.
MoneyGram: request a refund for an uncashed order
MoneyGram provides an online refund process for a money order that has not been cashed. Check its status first with the order number and exact amount; if it has been less than two weeks since mailing, the order may still be in transit.

MoneyGram does not list one fixed refund fee in the cited FAQ: the fee varies with the order’s face value and is shown during the refund request. Its FAQ also lists an $18 fee for requesting a photocopy of a money order; that is a separate service, not the refund fee. Check the MoneyGram Help Center for the applicable process and charge.
Western Union: request a refund for an uncashed retail money order
Western Union’s retail terms limit refunds to money orders that have not been presented or cashed. Its request process calls for the serial number, amount, purchase date, reason for the request, purchase location, and an image of the money order or receipt showing the barcode. The current U.S. request form requires proof of purchase and says processing takes five business days; the fee is deducted if the request is approved.
