Traffic-Aware Cruise Control (TACC) remains standard, but the broader driver-assistance package that includes Autosteer—the lane-steering feature many drivers mean by “lane centering”—is now tied to Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (Supervised) offering. Tesla currently lists that option at $99 per month in the U.S. The change applies to new orders; it does not mean every existing Tesla owner has lost Autosteer.
What changed for new Tesla orders?
TechCrunch and Ars Technica reported on January 23, 2026, that Tesla discontinued Basic Autopilot on new U.S. orders. Their accounts describe TACC as the baseline feature and Autosteer as part of the FSD offering. The change is established here through contemporaneous reporting, rather than a dated Tesla announcement.
Historically, Tesla’s Basic Autopilot combined TACC and Autosteer, according to a Tesla service bulletin hosted by NHTSA. That document describes the system as hands-on driver assistance; it is historical documentation, not a guide to today’s order configuration.

What do TACC and Autosteer each do?

What does the subscription cost, and how can drivers get it?
Tesla’s current U.S. support page lists Full Self-Driving (Supervised) at $99 USD per month, on a subscription basis rather than as an outright purchase. Buyers can add it while ordering; existing owners can subscribe through the Tesla app or the vehicle touchscreen. Tesla says pricing and availability may change. For a new-order buyer, that makes the distinction practical: TACC is part of the standard feature set Tesla describes, while access to the broader FSD (Supervised) package is a recurring monthly cost. For an existing owner considering a subscription, confirm the car’s eligibility and available functions before paying.

Does FSD mean the Tesla drives itself?
No. Tesla says FSD (Supervised) requires active driver supervision and does not make the vehicle autonomous. The company states: “None of these advanced driver assistance features make your Tesla vehicle fully autonomous or replace you as the driver.” The features available depend on vehicle configuration, hardware, software version, region, model, trim, and model year. Drivers should consult Tesla’s FSD support information for the functions supported by their vehicle.

What current and prospective owners should check
- If you are ordering: Check the specific vehicle’s configuration and included features in the U.S. order configurator; do not assume a listing for a different model or model year applies to yours.
- If you already own a Tesla: The reported change concerns new orders. Check your vehicle’s current software and feature menu rather than assuming the change removed equipment or access already on your car.
- If lane steering is essential: Verify whether Autosteer is available on the exact vehicle and what the current subscription terms are before budgeting for a monthly charge.
- If you only need speed and following-distance control: TACC is the relevant standard feature Tesla currently describes, but it does not replace steering.
