Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →For a new 2026 family SUV, “affordable” needs a clear limit: this shortlist uses starting MSRPs of about $32,000 or less where the supplied manufacturer sources state a price. That is a screening threshold, not a claim that every model or configuration will cost less than $32,000 out the door. Taxes, destination charges, options, dealer pricing and incentives vary by location and can change.
The available figures support a useful shortlist, not a defensible ranking of ten vehicles: comparable cargo measurements and current prices are not available for every candidate. The models below are options to investigate, with the strongest specific facts identified and the gaps made clear. Before deciding, check the exact trim and drivetrain, then try your own child seat and stroller in the vehicle.
How to compare an affordable SUV for family use
A low base price matters only if the vehicle works for your passengers and routine. Compare the same model year, trim and drivetrain when checking prices. Ask a dealer for an itemized out-the-door quote that separates MSRP, destination and delivery fees, taxes, registration, accessories, discounts and incentives.
- Passenger fit: Sit in the rear with the front seat adjusted for the household’s usual driver. Check access, headroom, legroom and whether the seat belts and seating positions work for your family.
- Child restraints: Bring the actual child seat, if possible. Check installation, buckle access and whether a rear-facing seat leaves enough room for the front passenger.
- Cargo: Test the stroller, sports equipment and regular shopping load with the rear seats occupied. Maximum cargo volume with seats folded does not show what fits on a normal family trip.
- Comfort and equipment: Compare the exact trim’s seats, climate controls and driver-assistance equipment. Features can vary substantially within a model line.
- Fuel economy and safety: Use estimates and ratings for the exact powertrain, model year and test. A result for one configuration or test type does not automatically apply to every version.
Only the Tiguan’s source here provides a specific pair of cargo-volume figures. The available figures do not support a consistent, model-to-model cargo ranking or an overall affordability ranking.

2026 family SUV shortlist
These candidates are presented alphabetically, not as a ranking. Stated starting prices are manufacturer figures for the cited configuration; they are not transaction-price estimates.
| Model | Available 2026 price or specification | Family-use consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Chevrolet Equinox | 2026 starting MSRP: not stated in the cited sources. | IIHS rated the 2025–26 Equinox acceptable in its specific whiplash-prevention evaluation. That is not an overall crashworthiness rating. Verify 2026 price, configuration and child-seat fit. |
| Honda CR-V | 2026 starting MSRP: not stated in the cited sources. Honda reports an EPA-estimated 40 mpg combined for the 2026 CR-V Hybrid; this figure applies to the hybrid, not every CR-V. | IIHS rated 2024–25 CR-V test vehicles acceptable in the whiplash-prevention evaluation. Confirm test applicability before treating that result as evidence about a 2026 vehicle. |
| Hyundai Tucson | Starting MSRP: $29,700, per Hyundai USA. Hyundai describes the Tucson as a two-row SUV seating five. | IIHS rated 2025–26 Tucson test vehicles poor in its whiplash-prevention evaluation. The rating concerns rear-impact seat and head-restraint performance, not overall crashworthiness. |
| Kia Sportage | 2026 Sportage LX FWD starting MSRP: $28,790, per Kia America Media. | IIHS rated the Sportage acceptable in the whiplash-prevention evaluation. Confirm the rating’s model-year applicability and check the LX FWD and other trims separately for equipment and fit. |
| Mazda CX-5 | Mazda’s January 13, 2026 announcement provides a starting MSRP, but the amount is not stated in the cited material here. | Mazda describes the 2026 model as having improved rear-seat and cargo space. Treat that as the manufacturer’s description rather than a directly comparable measurement; inspect the exact vehicle for family fit. |
| Nissan Rogue | 2026 starting MSRP: not stated in the cited sources. | IIHS rated 2025–26 Rogue test vehicles marginal in its whiplash-prevention evaluation. This is not an overall crashworthiness rating. |
| Subaru Forester | 2026 starting MSRP: not stated in the cited sources. | IIHS rated the Forester good in the whiplash-prevention evaluation. Check the IIHS entry for which model years and configurations the result covers. |
| Toyota RAV4 | 2026 RAV4 LE base MSRP: $31,900, per Toyota. Toyota reports five seats and fuel-economy estimates; use the figures for the exact trim and drivetrain. | IIHS rated the 2025 RAV4 good in the whiplash-prevention evaluation. That model-year-specific result should not be assumed to cover every 2026 version. |
| Volkswagen Tiguan | 2026 starting MSRP: $30,805. Volkswagen reports 33.8 cubic feet behind the upright rear seats and 69.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded. | The cargo figures help compare the Tiguan’s two seating configurations, but do not establish how a particular stroller or child-seat setup will fit. |
Price figures are starting points, not budgets
The cited manufacturer prices identify entry points, not what a family will pay at a dealership. Kia’s figure is specifically for the LX with front-wheel drive; Toyota’s is for the LE. Compare like-for-like trims and drivetrains, and confirm whether the quoted figure includes destination and delivery charges. Local taxes, dealer inventory, accessories and incentives can change the final price.

Space claims need a hands-on check
The Tiguan’s published cargo figures distinguish space behind upright rear seats from space with those seats folded. Mazda describes improved rear-seat and cargo space for the 2026 CX-5, but that statement is not a measurement comparable with Volkswagen’s figures. The supplied sources do not establish equivalent cargo measurements for the other models, so families should test their own gear rather than infer a winner from model name or maximum capacity.
What the safety ratings do—and do not—tell you
On January 27, 2026, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) introduced a whiplash-prevention evaluation. In its first 18 small SUVs tested, four earned good ratings. The evaluation concerns the rear seat and head restraint in rear impacts; it is not an overall crashworthiness score. The candidate results have different stated model-year ranges, so check the IIHS entry before applying any result to a particular 2026 vehicle.

IIHS President David Harkey said, “This new test challenges automakers to further improve their seats and head restraints to provide better protection in the rear impacts that typically cause these injuries.”
NHTSA’s 2026 model-year page is a list of vehicles selected for testing, not a ratings table. It includes the Chevrolet Equinox, Mazda CX-5, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4 Hybrid and Toyota RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid. Selection does not mean a vehicle has received five stars. Look up the exact vehicle configuration in NHTSA’s ratings database before reporting or relying on a star rating.

Which shortlist candidates merit a closer look?
Use the facts that are available to decide what to inspect first, not to declare a universal winner. The Sportage LX FWD and RAV4 LE have stated base prices below the roughly $32,000 screening ceiling. The Tucson and Tiguan also have stated entry prices within it. The Tiguan has the clearest cited cargo-volume comparison; the CR-V Hybrid has a published fuel-economy estimate, while Toyota’s cited specifications report estimates by exact RAV4 trim.
The IIHS whiplash-prevention results provide one narrow safety comparison: the Forester and 2025 RAV4 earned good; Equinox, CR-V test vehicles from 2024–25 and Sportage earned acceptable; the 2025–26 Rogue earned marginal; and 2025–26 Tucson test vehicles earned poor. These results cannot substitute for an overall safety assessment, and they do not settle child-seat fit, comfort or value.
