GameStop later reported a larger, official figure: 727 U.S. store closures during its fiscal year ended January 31, 2026. In September 2026, it also announced that select closed stores would reopen, without saying how many.
What does “over 400 GameStop stores” refer to?
In January 2026, the Los Angeles Times reported that an unofficial blog tracking closures estimated more than 400 GameStop locations—including more than 40 in California—had closed or were slated to close that month. GameStop had said it planned a significant number of additional closures in fiscal 2025, but had not announced an exact count at the time.

So the headline figure was a month-specific estimate reported by a newspaper, not a number GameStop confirmed. It also combined locations already closed with locations expected to close.
How many U.S. stores did GameStop actually close?
GameStop’s 2026 Form 10-K provides the company-reported fiscal-year total: its store portfolio review led to 727 U.S. closures during fiscal 2025, which ended January 31, 2026. The filing lists 1,598 U.S. stores as of that date. GameStop had 2,915 U.S. stores in February 2024, according to Retail Dive.

| Figure | What it counts | Source and timing |
|---|---|---|
| More than 400 locations | U.S. stores reportedly closed or slated to close during January 2026; an estimate, not a confirmed total | Unofficial tracker estimate reported by the Los Angeles Times in January 2026 |
| 727 stores | U.S. closures during GameStop fiscal 2025, which ended January 31, 2026 | GameStop 2026 Form 10-K |
| 1,598 stores | U.S. store count at fiscal year-end | GameStop 2026 Form 10-K; as of January 31, 2026 |
| 2,915 stores | U.S. store count before the later closures | GameStop figure reported by Retail Dive; February 2024 |
The two closure figures do not measure the same thing: the estimate covered one month and included planned closures, while the 727 figure is GameStop’s total for an entire fiscal year. The 1,598 figure is a dated year-end count, not a live October 2026 store locator total.
Is GameStop still closing stores in 2026?
In its Form 10-Q for the quarter ended August 1, 2026, GameStop said it did not anticipate closing a significant number of stores in fiscal 2026. The company described its domestic footprint as part of its logistics infrastructure and stores as fulfillment and service anchors. This is company guidance, not a guarantee that no individual stores will close.

The latest figures cited here concern U.S. stores. GameStop has also exited or sold international operations; its August filing says the sale of its French subsidiary was completed in fiscal 2026. That international change should not be combined with U.S. closure totals.
What does the reopening announcement mean?
In September 2026, GameStop announced that select closed stores would reopen nationwide starting September 11. Tom’s Hardware reported that the company did not disclose how many locations were involved; it also said a GameStop spokesperson told IGN at least one store had reopened as of September 11.

This was a limited, unquantified reopening announcement. It does not establish how many stores reopened or indicate that GameStop reversed its broader footprint strategy.

The reports and filings above do not establish an authoritative current list of store-by-store closures or reopenings. They cannot confirm the status of a particular location. Check directly with the store or GameStop’s official store information before making a trip, and look for a location-specific announcement rather than relying on a nationwide estimate.
