If you want to take back a resignation, tell your employer promptly and in writing that you want to withdraw it and continue working. Your employer may refuse, and whether you have any right to retract it depends on local law, your employment arrangement, how clear and voluntary the resignation was, and whether the employer has relied on it. Ask for a written decision; a request is not a guarantee of reinstatement.

Can I take back my resignation?

You can ask to withdraw a resignation, but do not assume you can cancel it unilaterally. In the UK and New Zealand, official guidance says an employer does not have to agree to the request. The rules can differ elsewhere and may depend on your contract, collective agreement, workplace status, and the circumstances surrounding your resignation.

Timing and the employer’s response may matter. For example, California’s unemployment-benefit guidance discusses cases where an employer relied on a clear resignation and took steps to replace the worker; in those cases, the employer was not obligated to accept an attempted withdrawal. That discussion concerns unemployment-benefit guidance and should not be treated as a rule governing every worker or legal claim.

There is no single deadline that applies everywhere. Make the request as soon as you decide you want to stay, and check the law and agreement that apply to your work.

What to do first

  1. Check your documents. Review your employment agreement, any collective agreement, and relevant workplace policy. Note the date you submitted your resignation and the proposed last day.
  2. Identify who received it. Contact the manager or HR representative who handles employment changes. If more than one person needs to know, send the request to the relevant contacts.
  3. Consider what has happened since. Note whether your employer has replied or taken steps based on your resignation. Acknowledgment or administrative processing is not a universal legal test for whether a resignation can be withdrawn.
  4. Send a direct written request. State which resignation you mean, that you want to withdraw it, and that you want to continue in your role. Keep the explanation brief; you do not need to invent a reason.
  5. Ask for a written decision. If the employer agrees, confirm that your employment continues and clarify the original last day and any changes to dates or work arrangements. If the request is declined or unanswered, ask what the decision means for your final day and promptly check your local rights or seek advice.

Example email requesting to withdraw a resignation

Use this as a starting point and replace the bracketed details. It is a communication example, not an official form or legal wording that compels an employer to agree.

Subject: Request to withdraw my resignation

Hello [Manager/HR name],

I’m writing to ask to withdraw the resignation I submitted on [date], with a proposed last day of [date]. I would like to continue in my role as [job title]. Please let me know whether you agree to this request and confirm your decision in writing. If you agree, please also confirm that my employment will continue and whether we need to update any dates or work arrangements.

Thank you,
[Name]

Short version for a conversation followed by email

“After thinking it over, I’d like to ask to withdraw my resignation and continue in my role. I submitted it on [date], and the proposed last day was [date]. Could you let me know whether the company will agree? I’ll send a short email so we have the request and decision in writing.”

What if I resigned in the heat of the moment?

Tell your employer promptly if your words were unclear or spoken in anger or distress, and explain that you want to continue working. A resignation made in the heat of the moment may be treated differently in some jurisdictions, but there is no universal test and it is not automatically invalid.

Official guidance in New Zealand and France discusses clarifying or retracting certain resignations made in such circumstances. Ontario policy also describes a limited exception when a heat-of-the-moment resignation is withdrawn quickly. The details depend on the applicable law, so get local advice if the employer disputes what you meant.

What if I was pressured to resign?

If you felt forced to resign, describe what happened and seek employment-law advice promptly. The fact that you felt pressured does not by itself establish that the resignation is legally invalid or that a particular legal claim applies. Keep copies of relevant messages and documents, and avoid relying on informal assurances about your rights.

How the rules differ by location and employment status

Location or context What the cited guidance says Important limit
United Kingdom An employee can ask to withdraw a resignation, but the employer does not have to agree; the employer should respond in writing. For a heat-of-the-moment resignation, the parties should promptly clarify what was meant. GOV.UK: Handling staff resignations Check the circumstances and applicable employment terms; this is UK guidance.
New Zealand A worker who changes their mind can ask to withdraw the resignation, but the employer need not agree. The guidance recommends checking the employment agreement and keeping workplace communications in writing. Employment New Zealand: Resignation The page was modified August 28, 2026; apply New Zealand rules only to the relevant employment relationship.
California, United States The state unemployment-benefit guide recounts cases where an employer that relied on a clear resignation and took steps to replace the worker was not obligated to accept a later withdrawal. California EDD: Voluntary Quit VQ 135 This is unemployment-benefit guidance, not a universal rule for all workers or claims.
Ontario, Canada Provincial policy says resignation notice generally cannot be withdrawn without the other party’s consent, while describing a limited exception for a heat-of-the-moment announcement withdrawn quickly. Ontario: Part XV, Termination and severance of employment Verify the current page and applicable facts; the stated exception is limited.
France Government guidance says a clear and unequivocal resignation generally cannot be retracted, while ambiguity or special circumstances such as anger, distress, or pressure may support a prompt retraction. Code du travail numérique / Service-Public.fr: Le salarié peut-il revenir sur sa démission ? This is a French rule, not a standard that applies across borders.
Pennsylvania public personnel system For the rule’s defined public-sector context, withdrawal after acceptance requires the appointing authority’s written consent; a different rule applies before acceptance or before the effective date. The rule states: “An employee’s resignation may not be withdrawn without the written consent of the appointing authority once the resignation has been accepted by the appointing authority.” Pennsylvania Code and Bulletin, Doc. No. 24-1077a Do not generalize this personnel rule to private employment or other public workers.
United States generally USAGov describes at-will employment and notes exceptions including signed contracts, collective bargaining agreements, public-sector employment, and illegal reasons for termination. USAGov: Termination guidance for employers This overview does not itself determine whether a particular resignation can be withdrawn.

These examples show why the same request can have different consequences: jurisdiction, public or private status, contract or union coverage, employer reliance, clarity and voluntariness, and how quickly you act may all matter. Consult the current rules that apply where you work.
