In-Car Subscriptions: Why Drivers Push Back—and How Automakers Are Responding

Not all in-car subscriptions are alike. Learn why drivers push back on paid access to installed hardware and how to assess connected services and software fees.

Drivers are most likely to object when a recurring fee appears to unlock hardware already installed in a car. They may see more value in paying for a service that depends on cellular connectivity, cloud systems or ongoing software support. That distinction helps explain why “in-car subscription” can mean very different things—and why consumer response varies by feature, price, vehicle and market.

Why in-car subscriptions draw backlash

A subscription can feel like paying twice when a car already contains the hardware and the charge merely enables access to it. Heated seats became the shorthand for that concern: the feature is tangible, familiar and often associated with a trim level buyers thought they had purchased.

In S&P Global Mobility’s 2023 survey, fewer than 30% of respondents said they were willing to pay a monthly subscription for heated seats or a heated steering wheel. The report notes that lower-cost comfort features may have less perceived value as subscriptions, particularly when they have long been standard on upper trims. This is evidence about those respondents and that question—not a measure of opposition to every type of paid car service. S&P Global Mobility’s 2023 findings.

Recurring billing also changes the ownership calculation. Buyers may compare a monthly charge with a one-time purchase, a higher trim price, or simply going without the feature. A seasonal feature can be especially difficult to justify at a year-round monthly rate. The question is not just whether a feature is useful, but whether its price and payment schedule fit how often the owner expects to use it.

Not all in-car subscriptions sell the same thing

The label covers at least three materially different arrangements. Whether a fee seems fair depends in part on what it pays for and whether the owner can get a similar benefit elsewhere.

Type of paid access What the fee may unlock Key value question
Preinstalled hardware access A feature such as heated seats that uses equipment already fitted to the vehicle. Does a recurring payment make sense for hardware the buyer may believe is part of the car, or would a one-time price or trim inclusion be clearer?
Connected services Services that rely on cellular connectivity, cloud systems or continuing delivery, such as connected navigation or safety and security features. Does the continuing service provide enough practical benefit to justify its recurring cost, and what happens when the plan ends?
Software or driver-assistance capabilities Digital functions or assistance features that an automaker makes available or updates through software. How frequently will the owner use the capability, what does the fee cover, and is the benefit worth paying for over time?

This is a useful starting point, not a guarantee that every product fits neatly into one category. A software feature may depend on connected infrastructure, and a vehicle may bundle different functions under one plan. Compare the actual service and terms rather than treating subscriptions as one uniform product.

What consumer surveys say about willingness to pay

S&P Global Mobility’s July 2023 report suggests that prior experience matters, but its figures describe specific respondent groups and questions—not all drivers.

  • Among roughly 4,500 respondents who had experienced a free trial or subscription on a model-year 2016-or-newer vehicle, 82% said they would definitely or probably consider subscriptions on a future new-vehicle purchase. That is a result for a group with prior exposure, not 82% of all car buyers.
  • The report says 28% of respondents either did not know connected services were available or said a dealer did not offer or mention them. Awareness and explanation can therefore affect whether buyers even consider a service.
  • Among current connected-service subscribers, 89% resubscribe, and 85% of respondents said they would recommend their connected service to a friend, as reported by S&P. These are separate measures of reported use and recommendation, not proof that every service or price is well received.
  • Navigation and safety/security features were among services respondents most wanted in their next vehicles. Paid safety upgrades such as high-beam assist and driving-video recording received 89% satisfaction in the survey; that satisfaction figure is distinct from willingness to subscribe for heated seats.

The contrast is instructive: some respondents report value in connected or safety-related functions, while fewer than 30% were willing to pay monthly for the specified comfort features. It does not establish a universal ranking of features or prices.

Phone alternatives and data trust affect perceived value

A built-in service has less appeal if a driver’s phone already does the job. In McKinsey’s Mobility Consumer Pulse Survey, an online survey of 30,978 participants across 15 markets fielded in December 2022, 85% of owners with Apple CarPlay or a similar service preferred it to the automaker’s built-in system. That result concerns owners who had such a service; it should not be generalized to every driver or every vehicle. McKinsey’s 2022 survey.

For automakers, relying on a phone interface can mean less direct access to infotainment usage data. S&P Global Mobility’s connected-car services research lead Fanni Li said, “GM cannot get consumers’ usage data from the infotainment system if users only connect via third party apps like Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.” That business interest does not itself establish that a native system is better for drivers; buyers still have to weigh its features, usability and privacy terms.

Data exchange is another part of the value calculation. In S&P’s 2023 report, 37% of respondents worried about security issues connected to vehicle data, while 32% did not understand what value connected services would provide in exchange for shared data. A subscription offer is easier to assess when the automaker explains what data is collected, how it is used and what the driver receives in return.

How automakers have responded

BMW: a market-specific heated-seat controversy

BMW’s heated-seat offer became a prominent example of the hardware-access objection, but the reported policy differed by market. Cars.com reported that BMW said heated seats specified by US customers would remain operational for the life of the vehicle, while describing a separate paid-access offer in the UK. Cars.com also recounts that BMW withdrew an earlier Apple CarPlay annual fee after customer backlash. These are reported historical details, not a statement of current terms for every BMW or market. In 2026, TechRadar reported that BMW head of product communications Alexandra Landers described the heated-seat and steering-wheel subscription model as “probably not the best way to start with it.” The same report said BMW continued to consider fees for digital functions, including driver-assistance and camera functions on future vehicles. This is secondary reporting of her remarks, not a global BMW policy announcement. TechRadar’s 2026 report.

GM: building a more native infotainment experience

S&P Global Mobility’s July 2023 report described GM’s proposed direction toward native infotainment and the removal of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto interfaces from that system. The report said GM framed the move as a way to reduce complexity and duplication, while noting the potential customer-satisfaction risk and an opportunity for the company to gain more usage data. Those points describe the proposal and analysis in that 2023 account; they are not a current compatibility guide for every GM vehicle.

How to judge a subscription before accepting it

When comparing two offers, separate the convenience of the feature from the economics and the terms. Use the vehicle’s market-specific documentation or account portal for current eligibility, pricing and cancellation details; older news coverage should not be treated as a current quote.

  1. Identify what the fee unlocks. Is it access to installed hardware, an ongoing connected service, or software or driver assistance? Find out whether the service needs a cellular connection or cloud support.
  2. Check for a substitute. A phone app, CarPlay or Android Auto may already meet the need. Compare what the built-in option adds rather than paying for overlap by default.
  3. Match the billing period to use. Estimate how often you will use the function. A monthly charge for occasional or seasonal use may compare poorly with a one-time option or a plan you can activate only when needed.
  4. Compare the full cost. Look for a recurring price, one-time purchase option, trim-level inclusion and any introductory trial. Consider the cost over the period you expect to own the car, not only the first payment.
  5. Read renewal and cancellation terms. Confirm when a trial converts to paid service, whether renewal is automatic, how cancellation works, and whether access continues through the end of a billing period.
  6. Confirm eligibility for your exact vehicle and location. Offers may vary by country, model, model year and equipment. Verify terms for the specific vehicle rather than relying on a headline about the brand.
  7. Understand the data trade. Check what vehicle or usage data the service collects and how the automaker describes its use. Decide whether the stated benefit justifies that exchange.

Why there is no single verdict on car subscriptions

The survey evidence does not support a single current measure of backlash across automakers and markets. S&P’s 2023 findings and McKinsey’s 2022 survey use different dates, populations and question wording, so their percentages should not be combined into one estimate of consumer sentiment. They do show why the feature and the terms matter: previous exposure can coincide with interest in future services, while phone substitution, low perceived value for certain installed features and uncertainty about data use can make a particular offer unattractive.

S&P Global Mobility analyst Yanina Mills captured both sides of that response: “Consumers are welcoming to the idea of subscriptions, because it gives them exposure to features or technology that they may not have had in the past.” She also warned, “When everything becomes a subscription, it becomes overkill.” For a buyer, the practical test is whether the specific recurring service provides a continuing benefit worth its price and conditions—not whether subscriptions as a category are good or bad.
