In an email to Block employees dated March 25, 2025, Jack Dorsey announced 931 job cuts—about 8% of the company’s staff, according to TechCrunch—and described them as a reorganization focused on strategy, performance, and management layers. The email also said Block would close 748 open roles. The account below reflects the version published by TechCrunch, which said it modified the email’s grammar and format slightly to protect its sources.
What did Jack Dorsey’s email say?
TechCrunch reported that it saw a leaked internal message in which Dorsey opened: “i want to give you all the straight facts.” He divided the 931 announced job eliminations into three categories:
| Category | Reported number | What the email described |
|---|---|---|
| Strategy | 391 | Roles eliminated for strategic alignment, as described in the email reproduced by TechCrunch. |
| Performance | 460 | Roles eliminated in connection with performance standards, as described in the email reproduced by TechCrunch. |
| Hierarchy | 80 | Manager positions eliminated as part of changes to organizational layers, as described in the email reproduced by TechCrunch. |
The three categories total 931. Separately, the email said 193 managers would move into individual-contributor roles. Those are role changes, not additional layoffs.
TechCrunch reported the total as about 8% of Block’s staff. The company had around 11,300 staff worldwide as of December 2024, according to figures TechCrunch attributed to Block’s latest 10-K at the time. These are reported figures, not an independently verified recount of the March 2025 changes.

Why did Dorsey say the cuts were happening?
In the published version, Dorsey framed the decisions around three issues: strategic alignment, performance standards, and organizational layers. He also explained why the actions were being taken at once: “we’re behind in our actions, and that’s not fair to the individuals who work here or the company.”
The email said the move was not intended to meet a specific financial target, replace employees with AI, or change Block’s headcount cap. Those are Dorsey’s stated explanations; the published message does not independently establish the company’s underlying motives.

What did the email say about open roles?
The message also announced that Block would close 748 open roles. As reported by TechCrunch, it listed exceptions for roles that had already reached the offer stage, critical operational positions, start/accelerate roles, and key leadership roles. The email’s explanation and exceptions are reported statements, not separately verified details of how every vacancy was handled.
How to read the published email accurately
TechCrunch said it saw a leaked internal message and lightly modified its reproduced version’s grammar and format to protect sources. The Guardian separately reported that Dorsey’s email was titled “smaller block” and presented the job cuts, management changes, and closure of open roles as one reorganization. Neither report establishes that its published text is a byte-for-byte copy of an original email archive.

For that reason, the quoted lines and category counts here should be attributed to the email as published by TechCrunch, rather than treated as a fully verified facsimile or official company filing.

The March 2025 email should not be conflated with Block’s separate workforce reduction announced in February 2026. In a 2026 SEC Form 8-K, Block said it expected to reduce its then-current workforce by more than 40%, estimated restructuring charges of $450 million to $500 million, and expected the work to be substantially complete by the end of the second quarter of 2026. Prepared remarks for the company’s 2026 earnings call described a reduction from more than 10,000 people to just under 6,000. Those later figures describe a distinct plan; they do not verify or revise the 2025 email’s reported counts.
