TELO MT1 vs. Tesla Cybertruck: Why a Smaller Electric Pickup Could Matter

TELO’s compact MT1 pickup has a reported $41,520 starting price, but the “half-price Cybertruck” claim is not a verified like-for-like comparison. Here’s what buyers should weigh.

The TELO MT1 is the compact electric pickup behind the “anti-Cybertruck” label. Its reported starting price is $41,520, but that does not establish that it currently costs half as much as a comparable Tesla Cybertruck: the 2026 reporting available here does not provide a directly comparable Cybertruck trim price. For personal-finance decisions, the more important question is whether TELO can deliver its announced truck, capabilities, and price—and whether its smaller footprint fits what you need.

What is the TELO MT1?

TELO Trucks, a California startup, is developing the MT1 as a compact electric pickup. “Anti-Cybertruck” is an editorial shorthand for its smaller footprint and friendlier styling, not a formal vehicle category or proof that it outperforms Tesla’s truck. Car and Driver reported a claimed length of 152 inches and a 2,000-pound payload in June 2026. Those figures describe the announced vehicle, not an independently validated production model.

Forbes reported in July 2026 that Tesla co-founders Marc Tarpenning and Martin Eberhard had backed TELO. That is notable context, but backing by recognizable founders does not establish delivery, reliability, or resale value.

What prices and range has TELO announced?

Published prices differ by configuration and source. The figures below are reported announced prices and targets, not a guarantee of the final price a buyer will pay. Options, taxes, delivery charges, and any later changes are not established in these reports.

Reported configuration Reported price Reported range Source and qualification
Single-motor rear-wheel drive, base $41,520 starting price 260 miles per charge target Forbes, July 2026, for price and range; Car and Driver, June 2026, also reported the $41,520 starting price.
Long-range version $45,500 350 miles per charge target Forbes, July 2026.
Dual-motor all-wheel drive $46,019 starting price not stated Car and Driver, June 2026.
Additional-motor configuration About $50,000 not stated Forbes, July 2026.

The 260- and 350-mile figures are reported targets, not independent road-test results. They should not be treated as a promise of the distance every driver will achieve; the reports do not establish real-world range under particular weather, speed, load, or route conditions.

Does it really cost half as much as a Cybertruck?

That phrase is not a reliable current price comparison on the available figures. The MT1’s $41,520 entry price is reported, but the 2026 coverage summarized here does not establish a comparable Cybertruck trim price. A valid ratio would require matching model year, drivetrain or trim, included equipment, options, and comparison date. Without those, “half the price” is a headline framing rather than a verified like-for-like result.

  • Quality Construction: Made from durable alloy die-cast materials ensuring long-lasting performance and detailed finish for realistic appearance
  • Age Appropriate: Specially designed for children aged 3 and above, providing safe and engaging play while developing motor skills and imagination

For a household budget, compare the specific versions you would actually consider—not one vehicle’s entry price against another vehicle’s higher-priced configuration. Also separate the advertised vehicle price from total purchase cost: local taxes and fees, insurance, charging installation if needed, and financing terms can change what ownership costs. Those amounts are buyer-specific and are not supplied for either truck in the reported coverage.

Why a compact electric pickup could matter financially

The MT1’s potential appeal is packaging: a shorter truck intended to retain useful pickup capacity while taking up less space than a full-size pickup. If your needs fit its eventual specifications, a compact electric truck could be a different kind of value proposition from simply choosing the cheapest full-size truck. But a shorter body or lower entry price alone does not prove lower lifetime cost.

  • Premium Finish: Eye-catching metallic blue paint with detailed interiors and authentic branding for a true-to-life look.

  • Durable & Collectible: Built from sturdy materials, perfect for long-lasting use, playtime adventures, or proudly displaying in your die-cast collection.
  • Match capability to use. The reported 2,000-pound payload and towing figure matter only if they suit your actual cargo and trailer needs. Capability figures remain company or publication-reported claims, not results from an independent test in the coverage described here.
  • Compare the specific trim. The reported prices vary by motor configuration and range target. A less expensive base vehicle is not a like-for-like substitute if you need more range or all-wheel drive.
  • Include ownership costs you can verify. Before committing, obtain the actual transaction price, insurance quote, charging requirements, and financing offer for your location and configuration. The reported coverage does not establish those costs for the MT1.
  • Value availability realistically. A planned vehicle cannot serve as a replacement for a truck you need now until it is actually available to buy and delivered.

What is known—and not yet established—about towing and safety?

Towing claims changed

Car and Driver reported a 6,600-pound towing capacity in June 2026. Electrek reported on August 7, 2026 that TELO raised its stated rating to 8,000 pounds. The later figure is TELO’s revised claim, not an independently tested result. The change itself is a reason to verify the final production specification before using the number to make a purchase decision.

Safety performance has not been verified in the reported coverage

Forbes reported that crash testing was planned for later in 2026 and quoted CEO Jason Marks expressing confidence based on computer modeling. The coverage described here provides no verified crash-test result or official safety rating. Computer modeling and an executive’s confidence are not substitutes for completed testing.

When could buyers get one?

Forbes reported TELO’s plan to begin with about 500 units and target first shipments by the end of 2026 or early 2027. Car and Driver reported in June 2026 that the company still targeted deliveries by year-end. These are forward-looking plans, not evidence that customers have received vehicles. Anyone deciding whether to wait should weigh that uncertainty against the cost and inconvenience of postponing a needed vehicle purchase.

A practical comparison checklist

Before treating the MT1 as a financially sensible alternative, compare the same categories for the exact vehicles and configurations under consideration:
