It may be a fit for a retailer willing to configure and maintain its own POS environment, but the project’s “commercial-grade” description is not independent certification. Before relying on it in a live store, confirm the exact build’s runtime requirements, device compatibility, payment options, support status and tax requirements.
What Chromis POS offers
The Chromis POS README calls the software “open source and free software licensed to you under the GNU GPL 3 license.” It also describes the product as “commercial-grade quality,” and says it can scale from one counter-top machine to terminals at multiple locations. Those are claims made by the project, not independently verified performance results or a third-party quality assessment. Chromis POS project README.
For a business owner, “free” refers to the software license; it does not establish that operating a POS setup has no costs. Hardware, installation, database administration, backups and support may require time or spending. The available project materials do not quantify those costs.
What to plan before choosing it
Assess the full operating setup, not just the license. Chromis documentation points to runtime and database configuration, sales and tax setup, peripherals and backup responsibilities. Confirm each of the following for the exact distribution you intend to use:

- Support and upkeep: Check the chosen distribution’s release notes and documentation for maintenance information and support arrangements. The available repository listing does not establish an official maintenance policy or response commitment. ChromisPos repository listing.
- Tax compliance: Confirm that your setup meets the rules in your jurisdiction; the project materials cited here do not establish jurisdiction-specific compliance.
How to set up Chromis POS
The project README describes an initial configuration sequence. Treat it as a setup outline, then follow the instructions that accompany the specific package you install.
- Confirm the build and runtime. A separate Chromis download README identifies Java 11 as a requirement. Requirements may differ between builds, so check the documentation for your exact package before installing a runtime. Chromis POS download README.
- Install the appropriate Java runtime for your operating system and processor architecture, as directed by the project README.
- Launch Chromis POS and configure the database and application settings. Check the build-specific documentation for the database details and any dependencies.
- Set up payment-gateway settings, roles and users. Do not infer from the presence of gateway settings that a particular provider is supported or certified.
- Configure taxes, categories and products. The README warns users to keep the default category, product and two default tax records. It says they may be renamed, but should not be deleted.
- Enter barcode data and configure the sales screen, including the buttons and images your workflow needs.
- Prepare a receipt-ticket layout and logo. The project documentation includes receipt-ticket templates and recommends planning the receipt layout.
- Take a backup after initial configuration and establish a regular backup process before using the system for live sales.
Printers, scanners and other hardware
Chromis documentation discusses product barcodes, receipt-ticket configuration and support for a variety of hardware. It does not provide a verified, current model-by-model compatibility list. That means a thermal receipt printer or barcode scanner should be treated as a hardware category to investigate, not as a guaranteed plug-and-play purchase.

Before buying a device, verify its exact model, connection type, operating-system support and setup instructions against the documentation for your chosen Chromis build. Apply the same check to a cash drawer or payment terminal; generic hardware support does not prove compatibility with a particular device.

The available main-application repository listing does not establish a current supported release, active maintenance policy or support response commitment. Before deploying, inspect the release notes and documentation for the precise distribution you plan to use. Check when it was updated, which runtime it requires, how upgrades affect the database, and where to get help. Test updates on a non-production copy and keep a restorable backup before changing a live installation.
When Chromis POS may be a fit
Chromis may suit an owner who wants GPL-licensed POS software and is prepared to configure the system, validate peripherals and manage backups. It is a weaker fit if you need verified compatibility with a specific device, a confirmed payment processor, jurisdiction-specific tax assurance or a defined support commitment that you cannot independently establish for the chosen build.
Compare options on license and total operating cost, supported operating systems and runtime, terminal needs, database and backup duties, hardware compatibility, tax and inventory workflow, and release and support documentation. The project materials establish some Chromis setup details, but they do not settle all of those questions for a particular store.
