For a work heel that is easier to manage through the day, start with a low heel—ideally two inches or less—and a stable shape such as a block heel or wedge. Fit matters just as much: your toes need room in both width and height, and a shoe that rubs or pinches is not a good all-day choice. SELF named Rothy’s The Mary Jane Heel its best-for-work pick, but its tester also reported heel rubbing, so no style should be treated as a universal fit.
How to choose comfortable heels for work
Keep the heel low and stable
Leakna Ung, DPM, told SELF to favor heels at or below two inches for comfort. She also recommends block heels or wedges over stilettos because they can distribute pressure more evenly and provide added stability. This is shopping guidance, not a guarantee against foot pain.
Check toe-box width and depth
A closed shoe should leave enough room for toes to spread without pressing against the sides or rubbing the top. Redness or irritation can be a sign that the fit is wrong. Grace Torres-Hodges, DPM, offers similar advice in Good Housekeeping’s 2026 work-heel guide, which advises avoiding ultra-pointed toe boxes and trying shoes when feet are more swollen.
Match the shoe to the day
Consider how much you will walk, whether you commute in the shoes, and how long you will be standing. A shoe that feels acceptable for a desk-focused day or short event may not suit a day of extensive walking. Check for heel slippage, pressure beneath the ball of the foot, and whether cushioning and arch support feel comfortable to you.

What to do if your work heels rub or hurt
Address pressure and friction carefully
SELF’s consulted podiatrist discusses metatarsal pads for pressure and heel pads for friction. These may help with a specific discomfort, but they cannot make a shoe that is too small or badly fitted into a suitable one.

Reassess the fit before wearing them all day
Try shoes when your feet are more swollen, as Torres-Hodges advises, and pay attention to pressure, rubbing, and toe movement. If a shoe causes persistent pain or visible irritation, choose a different fit rather than relying on padding to compensate.

Among the three SELF-tested options, the Mary Jane has the lowest reported heel and the clearest all-day work framing, but its rubbing and width caveats matter. The Anna Pump is better regarded as a shorter-wear possibility given the tester’s full-day discomfort. The Pierson is a higher option for less walking, despite being SELF’s wide-feet selection. Treat each as a starting point, not a promise that it will fit your feet.
