The Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) is a UK–Italy–Japan effort to develop a next-generation combat-air capability, with a crewed fighter at its centre. Its industrial design and development work is led by Edgewing, a joint venture launched in June 2025 by BAE Systems, Leonardo and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. Ltd. (JAIEC). The partners’ stated target is to have the aircraft enter service in 2035; that is a programme goal, not a confirmed delivery date.
What is the GCAP fighter jet?
GCAP is a government-industry programme, not a fighter project owned by one company. The United Kingdom, Italy and Japan are working toward a next-generation combat-air capability intended for their armed forces. The aircraft is described as the programme’s core platform, connected to a wider set of crewed and uncrewed systems.
BAE Systems says the programme is intended to address threats from 2040 onward. That future-threat timeframe is distinct from the stated 2035 target for entry into service. A concept model unveiled by government and industry partners at Farnborough in July 2024 shows a design concept, not a settled production configuration.
Who is building GCAP, and what does Edgewing do?
The programme has separate government and industrial organisations. The GCAP International Government Organisation (GIGO) represents the government side. Edgewing is the industry joint venture responsible for design and development.

BAE Systems, Leonardo and JAIEC each hold 33.3% of Edgewing. The launch announcement named Marco Zoff as its first CEO and said the aircraft’s expected product lifespan could extend beyond 2070; that is an expectation, not a guaranteed service life.
Design authority is not the same as manufacturing
Edgewing is to subcontract manufacturing and final assembly to BAE Systems, Leonardo, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries and the wider supply chain. The launch announcement therefore distinguishes the company directing design and development from the companies expected to undertake production work.

What has been announced about the aircraft and its systems?
Leonardo’s 2024 Annual Report Summary describes GCAP as a “system of systems” operating across five domains, with the fighter as the core platform connected to other crewed and uncrewed systems. This is a programme-level concept, not a final technical specification.
Leonardo lists intended features including an intelligent weapon system, a software-driven interactive cockpit, integrated sensors and a next-generation radar. The company says the planned radar will be capable of processing 10,000 times more data than current systems. That figure is Leonardo’s claim in its 2024 summary, not independently verified comparative test data.

When will the GCAP fighter enter service?
The stated target is 2035. On 3 July 2026, the UK Ministry of Defence announced a £4.6 billion contract, funded jointly by the three partner nations and awarded through the GCAP Agency to Edgewing, to advance the next design stage by establishing key requirements and conducting rigorous testing. It is a design milestone, not the aircraft entering service.
The UK announcement also said its Defence Investment Plan committed £8.6 billion to GCAP over four years. That is the UK’s stated programme commitment, not the total multinational programme budget. Japan’s Ministry of Defense separately confirmed that GIGO and Edgewing concluded the contract on 3 July 2026, covering work through the end of 2027.
What is not yet known about the GCAP aircraft?
Official programme sources do not establish final aircraft dimensions, speed, range, detailed weapons fit, production quantities, unit price or definitive configuration. Leonardo’s radar data-processing statement is a high-level claim, not a complete radar specification. These details should not be inferred from the concept model or from other fighter programmes.
