Microsoft said Bing passed 100 million daily active users by early March 2023, about a month after it launched a preview of AI-powered Bing. The company credited years of steady progress and a boost from more than one million new preview users; it did not measure how much of the milestone AI itself caused. The figure counts Bing daily active users, not daily users of Bing Chat.
What Microsoft reported about Bing’s 100 million users
On March 8, 2023, Microsoft’s Bing Search Blog announced that Bing had crossed 100 million daily active users. Yusuf Mehdi, then Microsoft’s corporate vice president and consumer chief marketing officer, described the milestone as the result of “a number of years of steady progress” with “a little bit of a boost” from more than one million new Bing preview users. Microsoft’s March 2023 announcement did not say that all 100 million users were using the new AI features.
Microsoft’s February 7 announcement had introduced a new AI-powered Bing and Edge in preview, saying Bing was running on a next-generation OpenAI large language model customized for search. CEO Satya Nadella said AI would “fundamentally change every software category, starting with the largest category of all – search.” The launch announcement establishes the timing and product context, not proof that AI alone produced the user milestone.
What the user and chat figures actually measure
Microsoft used “daily active users of Bing” for the 100 million figure. It is not interchangeable with a daily count of Bing Chat users. The company did not provide a detailed methodology for the Bing daily-active-user measure in the cited announcements, so the figure should be attributed to Microsoft rather than treated as an independently audited count.

In May 2023, Microsoft reported over 500 million chats in 90 days, over 200 million images created with Bing Image Creator, and a fourfold increase in daily Bing mobile-app installs since launch. Those are separate measures of activity, creation, and app installs—not additional ways of stating the 100 million daily-user figure. Microsoft’s May 2023 update also said Bing exceeded 100 million daily active users.
How many daily users did Microsoft report later?
In its April 2024 FY2024 third-quarter earnings call, Microsoft reported that Bing had reached more than 140 million daily active users. This is a later, dated company statement, not a current 2026 count. The earnings-call transcript is the source for that figure.

Microsoft’s April 2023 release said around one third of the millions using the new Bing preview were new to Bing. That proportion applies to preview users described in the release; it should not be generalized to all Bing users. The same announcement connected new AI capabilities with increased engagement, but did not isolate their causal effect. Microsoft’s April 2023 statement likewise provides the company’s account rather than an independent causal analysis.

No. In its March 2023 post, Microsoft characterized Bing as still a “small, low, single digit share player.” The 100 million daily-active-user milestone therefore should not be read as evidence that Bing had overtaken competitors or become the market leader. A ranking against other search engines would also require comparable dates, user definitions, geographies, and measurement methods, which these announcements do not supply.
