The AI race is on.” His confidence came as investors questioned whether the enormous spending on AI would produce lasting returns—and as NVIDIA’s near-term outlook excluded potential China revenue.
What Huang meant by “the AI race is on”
Huang made the remark at the end of his prepared remarks after NVIDIA reported results for its fiscal second quarter of 2026, which ended in late July 2025. He described Blackwell as the company’s next-generation AI platform and cast the build-out of AI computing capacity as the start of a new industrial revolution. NVIDIA’s earnings-call transcript preserves the statement in context.
His argument was that AI development requires large-scale computing infrastructure—what NVIDIA calls AI factories—and that demand for this capacity would extend well beyond the current product cycle. Huang said: “Our Blackwell and Rubin AI factory platforms will be scaling into the $3 trillion to $4 trillion global AI factory build out through the end of the decade.” That is a forward-looking estimate from NVIDIA’s CEO on the August 2025 call, not money already spent or an independent industry forecast.
Huang also characterized hyperscaler investment as substantial, saying large cloud providers’ capital expenditure had doubled in two years and was running at about $600 billion annually. This, too, was his description on the call, rather than an independently verified measure of all AI-related spending.

What NVIDIA’s results showed—and what they did not
Contemporaneous reports described strong year-over-year growth in the quarter. ITPro reported revenue of $46.74 billion, up 56%. The National reported data-center revenue of $41.1 billion, also up 56%, and net income of $26.42 billion, a 59% annual increase. The National noted that data-center revenue was slightly below Wall Street estimates. ITPro’s total-revenue figure and The National’s $46.73 billion figure differ by one-hundredth of a billion, a reporting or rounding difference.
Those results show that NVIDIA was selling a large and growing volume of data-center systems at the time. They do not, by themselves, establish that customers will earn enough from AI services to justify their infrastructure spending, or that the spending pace can continue through the end of the decade. Huang’s long-range forecast and the reported quarterly figures answer different questions: one is a company leader’s view of future investment; the other is a snapshot of past sales.

Why investors were debating an AI bubble
Bubble concerns focused on expectations: whether enthusiasm and valuations had risen faster than the eventual financial returns from AI. ITPro reported that those concerns had intensified after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said investors were overexcited about AI. Calling the market a bubble, however, is a judgment about prices and future returns—not a settled fact established by NVIDIA’s quarterly earnings.
The bullish case Huang presented was that AI adoption would require successive generations of computing capacity, keeping infrastructure demand high. The unresolved question for investors is whether customers’ revenue and productivity gains will ultimately support the scale of investment. The reported results and Huang’s comments do not independently quantify those returns.

Why China mattered to the near-term outlook
The long-term demand story did not remove a near-term risk: access to China. NVIDIA’s third-quarter sales outlook excluded potential China revenue, and Reuters reported that shares fell after the outlook was viewed as tepid. Reuters covered the guidance and the excluded China sales.
The National reported that the outlook assumed no H20 shipments to China. It also quoted Huang saying NVIDIA had delivered a record quarter without China and was guiding to another record quarter without China. Those were historical statements made in August 2025; they should not be read as a current sales forecast. Export policy and market access therefore remained material uncertainties even as Huang argued that global demand for AI infrastructure was strong.

How to read the “AI race” claim as an investor
- Separate actual results from projections. Quarterly sales and earnings describe a completed period. The $3 trillion to $4 trillion AI-factory build-out was Huang’s forecast through the end of the decade.
- Look beyond infrastructure orders. Hardware demand is evidence of spending; it is not proof that businesses will generate returns sufficient to sustain that spending.
- Track near-term guidance and market access. NVIDIA’s China exclusion showed that export restrictions could affect the outlook independently of global AI demand.
- Treat “bubble” as a question, not a conclusion. The August 2025 evidence captured a debate about expectations and returns, but did not establish a probability that AI investment was in a bubble.
The headline belongs to the August 2025 earnings story: a confident company forecast backed by rapidly growing reported sales, set against questions about investment payoffs and a near-term China caveat. It is not a fresh forecast for October 2026.
