Pure Storage founder and chief visionary officer John “Coz” Colgrove said flash storage will eventually improve more slowly, but he considers that a distant prospect. In an interview published by ITPro on June 21, 2024, he said he did not expect a serious alternative to flash before the 2030s. He sees flash as especially useful for AI inference, where organizations need fast, scalable access to data. Those timelines and assessments are Colgrove’s views, not independently verified forecasts.
When does Colgrove expect flash efficiency to flatten?
Colgrove did not give a year when flash will stop improving. He described the slowdown as far off: “At some point in the future – far distant future – it will flatten out, because no technology goes forever.” He also said, “At some point beyond the horizon … flash will stop improving, or it will slow down.” Both statements are his forecast in the ITPro interview, not a technology-industry consensus or a measured prediction.
As an analogy, Colgrove characterized disk storage as having improved over a 70-year trajectory before flash took the lead. He expects flash to follow a similarly long arc: continued progress, followed eventually by slower improvement and the eventual arrival of another storage technology. The 70-year figure is his description, not an independently established statistic.
Why does he think flash still has room to improve?
Colgrove pointed to two avenues for continued flash development: making memory cells smaller and stacking more layers. In his view, those approaches leave room for progress before the technology reaches a plateau. He said a successor would need not only to emerge, but also to complete the lengthy process of reaching scale; on that basis, he considered a meaningful alternative unlikely before the 2030s. That date is a forecast made in 2024, not a confirmed timetable.

How does flash fit into AI workloads?
Colgrove distinguishes between training an AI model and running it to produce answers, known as inference. He expected most training to take place at hyperscale cloud providers, a small number of very large technology companies, and GPU cloud providers. He saw a broader storage opportunity in inference, where organizations need responsive, scalable access to data while preserving access for their other business uses.
That argument is about the role of storage around AI workloads, not a claim that flash alone performs AI computation. Colgrove’s case is that organizations will need to make valuable data available to AI systems without losing ordinary access to it.

What does he say about flash management and efficiency?
Colgrove described Pure Storage’s management approach as moving flash management out of individual direct flash modules and into the host, where it can be coordinated across the modules in that host. He said monitoring flash condition and write life across an enterprise storage estate can help improve efficiency and extend flash life. The interview presents these as the company founder’s descriptions and claims; it does not provide an independent benchmark or quantified comparison.

Colgrove warned that AI workloads can carry a substantial environmental burden, saying: “AI destroys sustainability because the GPUs use so much power,” Colgrove says. The interview does not quantify that energy use or compare it with other workloads. His related point is that valuable enterprise data raises the importance of dependable storage: “Efficient storage that is resilient, reliable, available, durable … becomes more important for that because your data’s more valuable.” These are his views about the stakes of AI and data stewardship, rather than measured findings about energy savings from flash.
