Commtouch announced on January 7, 2014, that it would operate globally as CYREN, effective immediately. The legal name change followed in February, and its stock ticker changed from CTCH to CYRN on February 24, 2014. The three steps—operating identity, legal name and trading symbol—happened on different dates.
Commtouch’s rebrand happened in three stages
| Date | Milestone | What it meant |
|---|---|---|
| January 7, 2014 | Operating identity announced | Commtouch said it was operating globally as CYREN, effective immediately. The announcement described a shift toward cloud-based information-security solutions. |
| February 5, 2014 | Shareholder resolution | At an adjourned special meeting, shareholders approved a legal name change, subject to authorization by Israel’s Registrar of Companies and issuance of a name-change certificate. The company’s filing records the resolution. |
| February 9, 2014 | Regulatory approval | Israel’s Registrar of Companies approved the new name, according to the company’s February 19 SEC-filed report. The filing documents the approval. |
| February 19, 2014 | Legal name change reported complete | Commtouch announced that Commtouch Software Ltd. had become CYREN Ltd. Shares still traded under CTCH while the ticker transition was pending. The company release reported the completion. |
| February 24, 2014 | Ticker changed | The company said trading on NASDAQ and the Tel Aviv Stock Exchange would begin under CYREN Ltd. and the symbol CYRN. The ticker announcement gives the effective date. |
Why Commtouch said it was changing its identity
Commtouch presented CYREN as a reflection of a strategic move from supplying component security technology toward cloud-based services that customers and partners could deploy or private-label. Its January announcement described CYREN Web as the first service on its cloud infrastructure; a February release referred to CYREN WebSecurity as the first service delivered through that infrastructure. These were the company’s descriptions of its strategy and products at the time, not independent evaluations of their performance.
In the January announcement, then-chairman and CEO Lior Samuelson called the move “far more than just a name change.” He said the rebranding came as the company shifted from a component technology company to a “plug-and-play” security solution provider. Those statements explain the company’s contemporaneous rationale; they do not establish how successful the strategy was.
What the CYREN name covered at launch
The January 2014 announcement said that Germany-based Eleven and the Iceland-based FRISK Software antivirus unit had also adopted the CYREN name. The company described its services as web, email and anti-malware security for service providers, software vendors and their partners. These are historical descriptions of the business at launch; they do not confirm that the same products or services remain available today.

What the ticker change means for the timeline
For someone tracing an old company announcement, filing or trading record, the dates matter: a public operating-name change did not instantly alter the legal name or the stock symbol. The legal change required a shareholder resolution and Israeli regulatory approval, and the ticker remained CTCH until CYRN began trading on NASDAQ and TASE on February 24, 2014. The cited announcements and filings establish this 2014 sequence, but do not establish CYREN’s current corporate status or present-day service availability.
