The PSF says the partnership will support its ongoing work, with an emphasis on security across the Python ecosystem. Its announcement describes planned projects and support—not a disclosed spending breakdown or proof that the work has already improved security.
Why is Anthropic contributing $1.5 million?
The PSF said the contribution is intended to support the foundation’s work, especially Python ecosystem security. That includes work involving CPython, the Python language implementation, and PyPI, the Python Package Index used to distribute Python packages. The announcement does not give a more specific rationale from Anthropic or quote a named Anthropic representative.
The PSF’s exact description was: “We are thrilled to announce that Anthropic has entered into a two-year partnership with the Python Software Foundation (PSF) to contribute a landmark total of $1.5 million to support the foundation’s work, with an emphasis on Python ecosystem security.” (Python Software Foundation announcement, January 13, 2026.)
What does the PSF plan to fund?
The announcement names several intended areas, but does not assign a dollar amount to any of them.
#1 Best Overall
Proactive package review and malware analysis
The PSF intends to develop tools for automated, proactive review of packages uploaded to PyPI. The foundation described its existing approach as reactive-only; the planned tools are meant to add review before or around package availability rather than relying solely on responding after problems surface. The PSF also plans to create a dataset of known malware to support analysis of security capabilities. These are planned projects, not tools or a dataset the announcement says are already complete.
Core language and infrastructure work
The contribution is also meant to support ongoing work on CPython and core infrastructure such as PyPI. The release does not specify which infrastructure projects will receive funds or how the money will be divided among them.
Rank #2
People and community programs
The PSF says the partnership will support its Developer in Residence program, community grants, and other programs. It does not provide an allocation for these activities or identify particular grants.
Will the partnership make PyPI safer?
That is the intended direction, but the announcement does not establish a security outcome. Automated package review and malware analysis could strengthen the PSF’s ability to identify risks, but the release gives no delivery dates, evaluation results, or evidence that attacks have been prevented. It also does not say that the planned tools are already deployed.
The PSF expects the work to be transferable to other open-source package repositories. That is a potential benefit described by the foundation, not confirmation that another repository has adopted the tools or dataset.
How the funding fits the PSF’s wider security work
In a February 2026 security explainer, the PSF said its Python Security Response Team coordinates vulnerability reporting and remediation. The foundation reported that the team issued 16 advisories for CPython and pip in 2025. That figure describes the team’s activity before the January partnership announcement; it is not an outcome attributed to Anthropic’s contribution. (Python Software Foundation security explainer, February 2026.)
The PSF’s Strategic Plan 2026, covering 2026–2031, includes securing Python’s software supply chain and distribution infrastructure. The foundation says its board adopted the plan on July 8, 2026. This is consistent with the partnership’s stated security emphasis, but does not show that Anthropic’s funding caused or specifically pays for the plan. (PSF Strategic Plan 2026.)

- Announced amount and term: $1.5 million over two years, as stated by the PSF on January 13, 2026.
- Payment timing: The announcement does not say when installments will be paid or that the full amount was disbursed at once.
- Budget: No dollar-by-dollar allocation among security projects, infrastructure, staff, grants, or other programs is disclosed.
- Results: The release outlines intended work but does not report completed deliverables or measure a change in Python ecosystem security.
The PSF’s current sponsor page lists Anthropic as a Visionary Sponsor. The foundation notes that sponsor support does not mean it endorses a sponsor’s specific activities; that general sponsor listing is distinct from the January announcement of a two-year contribution.
