Bombardier acquired Learjet in 1990 to expand its growing aerospace business with an established business-jet manufacturer, aircraft products and production capability. Learjet was also financially weakened and available through bankruptcy proceedings, but the available record supports that as deal context—not as proof that distress alone motivated Bombardier.
Why Learjet fit Bombardier’s strategy
Bombardier was building an aerospace business through acquisitions. The U.S. International Trade Commission describes its aerospace growth as acquisition-led and places Learjet within a broader portfolio of business jets. A peer-reviewed study likewise characterizes Bombardier’s approach as acquiring companies with advanced products and production capacity, with Learjet among them.
Together, those accounts point to a practical strategic fit: buying Learjet gave Bombardier an established presence in business aviation, along with products and capability it could add to its expanding aerospace operation. The evidence does not establish a single contemporaneous statement by Bombardier management explaining the decision.
Why Learjet was available to buy
Learjet was in a difficult position before the acquisition. A historical case overview hosted by ERIC cites competition, a general aviation downturn, product-liability concerns and other economic problems. It reports that a bankruptcy court approved Bombardier’s purchase on April 27, 1990; that date is attributed to the case overview, rather than to the court order itself.

This seller-side distress helps explain the circumstances in which a purchase could happen. It should not be mistaken for a documented statement of Bombardier’s motive: the sources support strategic expansion as the rationale that made the deal fit, but do not show that Learjet’s financial problems alone drove the acquisition.
What Bombardier did with the acquisition
Bombardier’s corporate history dates the Learjet Corporation acquisition to 1990 and says it enabled the company to launch the Learjet 60, which Bombardier describes as the top-selling aircraft in its class. The company’s FY1999 annual report also places Learjet aircraft in its light, super-light and midsize business-jet segments, reporting deliveries and market shares. Those later products and results show Learjet’s role in Bombardier’s portfolio; they do not, by themselves, prove the precise reasoning behind the 1990 decision.
