Clorox 2 for Colors and OxiClean Color Boost are manufacturer-identified, non-chlorine oxygen-bleach options for colored laundry. Neither is established as objectively superior by a cited head-to-head test or current value comparison. “Color-safe” also does not guarantee that every dye or garment will retain its color, so follow care and package labels and test first when uncertain.
What color-safe bleach is—and what it is not
Color-safe bleach generally refers to non-chlorine oxygen bleach, often peroxide-based. It is formulated for laundry stain treatment and brightening on many washable colored fabrics. That is different from ordinary chlorine bleach: Clorox identifies peroxide as the basis of Clorox 2 for Colors and sodium hypochlorite as the active ingredient in its regular disinfecting bleach.
The name is not a guarantee for every fabric, dye, finish, or combination of colors. Check the garment’s care label and the product label. If colorfastness is uncertain, test an inconspicuous spot before treating the full item.
Two options, with different product-use details
| Product | What the manufacturer says | Forms and stated uses | Key qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clorox 2 for Colors Laundry & Fabric Stain Remover | Peroxide-based, non-chlorine product for colors. | Liquid: wash-cycle use, pretreatment, or presoak. Powder: wash-cycle use or presoak. Packs: wash-cycle use only. | Follow the current package directions and washer manual. Clorox’s guidance does not establish safety for every garment or dye. |
| OxiClean Color Boost | Chlorine-free, oxygen-based formula marketed for colored clothing and machine-washable household fabrics. | Use according to the current package directions. | Test an inconspicuous area if colorfastness is uncertain; no comparative performance result establishes it as better than Clorox 2. |
Clorox lists multiple forms and uses, making its liquid, powder, and pack directions relevant when choosing a treatment method. OxiClean describes Color Boost for colored clothes and machine-washable household fabrics such as towels, sheets, napkins, and pillow or cushion covers. The available manufacturer information does not provide a controlled comparison of stain removal, fabric effects, or value, so a universal winner cannot be substantiated.

Choose by task, fabric, and washer
For a wash-cycle booster
Check whether the specific product is intended for wash-cycle use and follow its package directions. Clorox says packs are for the wash cycle only and should go into the washer basket before laundry. Placement and dosing can vary by product and machine; check both the product label and washer manual.
For a stain that needs pretreatment or soaking
Clorox lists its liquid for pretreatment and presoak, and its powder for a wash cycle or presoak. For liquid pretreatment, Clorox says not to let the product dry on the fabric and to limit pretreatment to no more than ten minutes before rinsing or washing. These are Clorox 2 directions, not universal rules for other products; use the current label for the item you have.

For an HE washer
Clorox’s brand-specific guidance is to pair liquid color-safe bleach with liquid detergent and powdered color-safe bleach with powdered detergent in an HE washer. Consult the machine’s Use and Care Guide and the product label for the correct dispenser or drum placement. Do not assume these directions apply to every brand of bleach or washer.
For a standard washer
Clorox describes adding its product with detergent as the washer fills, before clothes are added. Its packs go into the basket before laundry. Follow the directions for your own product and machine rather than transferring placement instructions between forms or brands.

Test an uncertain color before treating the load
For Clorox 2 liquid, Clorox’s test method is to put a drop on a hidden area, wait five minutes, rinse, let the spot dry completely, and inspect it for a color change. On a multicolor garment, test each color. For OxiClean Color Boost, the manufacturer advises testing an inconspicuous area when colorfastness is uncertain; use its package directions.
A hidden-area test can help identify a color reaction, but it does not replace the care label or product directions. Do not use a color-safe product on a garment if its care instructions prohibit it.

Does color-safe bleach disinfect or kill germs?
Do not infer sanitizing performance from a product’s color-safe or stain-removal claims. Clorox says Clorox 2 for Colors is not EPA-registered as a laundry sanitizer. If germ-kill performance is the goal, check for an EPA-registered laundry sanitizer and follow its label for the intended use.

How to make a practical choice
- Choose a product whose label matches the garment and the job—wash-cycle boosting, pretreatment, or soaking.
- Choose a form you can use correctly in your washer, following both the product directions and the washer manual.
- When colorfastness is uncertain, test a hidden area using the product maker’s method.
- For sanitizing, select a product specifically registered and labeled for that purpose; stain treatment is not proof of germ-kill performance.
- Do not pay more on the assumption that one of these options cleans better: no cited head-to-head test or verified current price comparison establishes a performance or value winner.
