Use the IRS’s Where’s My Refund? tracker to check your federal individual income tax refund. It shows whether the IRS received, approved, or sent the refund; it does not show live activity inside your bank account. After the IRS marks a refund “sent,” your bank or credit union may still need time to post it.
Check your federal refund with the IRS tracker
- Open the IRS Where’s My Refund? page and select the tracker. Use the official IRS site rather than a third-party page requesting tax or bank information.
- Have your filed return available. Enter your Social Security number or ITIN, filing status, and the exact expected refund amount in whole dollars. Select the tax year if asked.
- Check the result and its status. The IRS says current-year e-file status is generally available 24 hours after filing; a prior-year e-file can take 3 or 4 days, and a mailed paper return about four weeks.
The IRS recommends checking once a day. Status information is updated daily, not continuously.
Understand each refund status
Return Received
The IRS has received your return. This does not mean it has finished processing or approved a refund.
Refund Approved
The IRS has processed and approved the refund. The tracker provides a personalized refund date after approval.

Refund Sent
The IRS has issued the refund. This status confirms IRS issuance, not that your financial institution has posted the money to your account.
How long a refund can take
The IRS says most refunds are issued in fewer than 21 days. Its general guidance describes typical receipt as about three weeks for an e-filed return and six or more weeks for a mailed return. These are broad expectations, not a promised payment date; review, corrections, certain credits, or other circumstances can extend processing.

The first day you can check the tracker is different from the time it takes to receive a refund:
| Return filed | When status is generally available | General receipt expectation |
|---|---|---|
| Current-year e-file | After 24 hours | About three weeks for a typical e-filed return; the IRS says most refunds are issued in fewer than 21 days. |
| Prior-year e-file | After 3 or 4 days | Not stated separately by the IRS in the cited guidance. |
| Paper return by mail | About four weeks | Six or more weeks is typical, according to the IRS. |
Timing figures are IRS general guidance, not guarantees for an individual return. “Status available” means the tracker can show information; it does not mean the refund is approved or on its way.

When the IRS says the refund was sent but it is not in your account
Allow your bank or credit union time to process the deposit. Financial institutions can take additional time to post a payment, and weekends or holidays may affect processing. The IRS tracker cannot show the bank’s internal payment activity.
- Check the bank account or payment app for pending deposits and ask the institution whether it accepts tax refunds for that account type.
- Compare the routing and account numbers on your filed return with the account you expected to receive the refund.
- Look for an IRS notice or message explaining a rejected deposit or requesting banking information. Follow the specific instructions in that notice and use a secure IRS online account if directed.
IRS guidance updated January 27, 2026, says that if banking details are missing, the IRS may mail a CP53E notice asking the taxpayer to respond, including through an Individual Online Account. It also says IRS employees cannot take direct-deposit information by phone or in person. Follow the notice and current IRS instructions for your tax year and situation.

Confirm direct-deposit details before filing
Enter the account and routing numbers on your tax return and check them carefully. A bank or credit union, eligible payment app or prepaid card, and some other account types may accept a federal refund, but acceptance depends on the institution and account. Confirm its rules for receiving tax refunds before choosing the account.

Business return
The ordinary refund tracker is for individual Form 1040 returns. The IRS directs business refund inquiries to a separate channel.
Other ways to check an individual refund
The IRS also lists its mobile app, an Individual Online Account, and automated phone options. A 2026 IRS tax tip says the online account may show refund status and allow email notifications when that status changes. The same tax tip lists 800-829-1954 for refund inquiries and 866-464-2050 for amended-return inquiries; confirm current contact options on IRS.gov.
If the refund still appears to be missing
Use the IRS status tool and follow the instructions it gives for your case. For a refund that may be lost or misdirected, the Taxpayer Advocate Service describes the refund-trace process and directs taxpayers to use IRS refund-status tools first. Start with the guidance for your specific situation at the Taxpayer Advocate Service’s “Where’s My Refund?” page.
