The Senate confirmed Stephen Vaden as deputy secretary of agriculture on June 10, 2025, by a 51–44 vote. Reactions from USDA, senators and several agricultural organizations were supportive, with praise centered on his government experience, farm-community ties, trade knowledge and understanding of regulation and supply chains. Those statements reflect the views of the named officials and groups, not a measure of support across the entire agriculture sector.

When was Stephen Vaden confirmed, and what was the Senate vote?

The Senate confirmed Vaden on June 10, 2025, by a 51–44 yea-nay vote, recorded as roll-call vote 301. The Senate had separately voted 48–45 on cloture, with seven senators not voting. Cloture is a procedural vote to limit debate; it was not the confirmation tally. The Senate Agriculture Committee’s confirmation announcement and the Senate’s cloture roll call record the distinct votes.

Before the confirmation, the Senate Agriculture Committee held a hearing on the nomination on April 8, 2025, and advanced it to the floor on May 5, 2025. The committee’s release provides that timeline.

What experience did Vaden bring to USDA?

USDA said Vaden had served as the department’s general counsel during President Donald Trump’s first term, had been appointed to the U.S. Court of International Trade in 2020, and continued to help manage his family farm in Union City, Tennessee. Agriculture.com reported that he served as USDA general counsel from December 2018 to December 2020. These are background facts cited in contemporaneous coverage; they do not establish how he performed after confirmation. USDA’s June 11, 2025, announcement and Agriculture.com’s account describe his prior roles.

What did officials and agricultural groups say?

The favorable reactions emphasized different aspects of Vaden’s background. The statements below are attributed opinions from the speakers and organizations, not independent assessments of his qualifications or later results.

USDA and Senate leadership: experience and farm communities

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins welcomed Vaden back to USDA and praised his first-administration experience. Senate Agriculture Committee Chairman John Boozman cited Vaden’s public service, preparation, agricultural-policy knowledge and understanding of farm communities. Boozman also said he looked forward to working with him on the needs of farmers, ranchers and producers. Rollins’s statement and Boozman’s statement contain their full comments.

Farm Bureau and state agriculture departments: producers and rural communities

American Farm Bureau Federation President Zippy Duvall connected Vaden’s family farm and past USDA work to the challenges facing farmers, and said the organization looked forward to engaging with him. National Association of State Departments of Agriculture CEO Ted McKinney emphasized Vaden’s USDA leadership and the importance of partnership, describing him as well-qualified to address agricultural challenges and opportunities. AFBF’s statement and NASDA’s statement give each group’s full rationale.

Cattle and meat groups: trade and market access

National Cattlemen’s Beef Association Senior Vice President of Government Affairs Ethan Lane focused on Vaden’s experience with trade issues and the potential importance of market access for cattle producers. Meat Institute President and CEO Julie Anna Potts likewise highlighted trade, specifically access for meat and poultry, and pointed to regulatory issues affecting the supply chain. These organizations’ statements express their priorities and expectations; they are not evidence that the anticipated outcomes occurred. NCBA’s statement and the Meat Institute’s statement provide their comments.

What these reactions do—and do not—show

The June 10–11 coverage documents supportive comments by the officials and organizations named above. Their reasoning ranged from producer and rural-community concerns to trade access and regulatory or supply-chain expertise. It should not be read as a survey of agricultural stakeholders or as a claim of universal industry backing. The statements also describe expectations at the time of confirmation, not independently verified evidence about Vaden’s subsequent performance. Agriculture.com notes that some statements in its coverage were edited or condensed for style and clarity, so its account is not a substitute for the full primary statements linked above.
