Among the strangest reported insurance stories are a winemaker’s nose, an actor’s smile, a hotel’s cover against ghost-related harm—and a tongue that was reportedly insured but remains unconfirmed. These are editorial selections, not an objective ranking: the stories differ in evidence, purpose and age, and many lack publicly available policy documents.
Why insure a body part—or a ghost risk?
Insurance generally transfers a specified financial risk to an insurer for an agreed value. For a performer, a body part may be tied to the ability to earn a living; for a company, a policy can also serve a promotional purpose. Wendy Baker, then-president of Lloyd’s America, told A.M. Best in 2007 that underwriters looked for “a reasonable need for the policy” and whether the body part allowed the person to earn a living. That rationale helps explain some celebrity stories, but not every unusual policy is a body-part policy—or a confirmed celebrity purchase.
The figures below are reported historical values, not current valuations or proof of what a policy would pay under any particular claim. Sources generally do not provide the full terms, exclusions or current status. Where a sponsor or client arranged coverage, that distinction matters.
Ten unusual reported insurance stories
1. A winemaker’s nose, reportedly valued at $8 million
GEICO reports that Dutch winemaker Ilja Gort insured his nose for $8 million. The reported restrictions included riding motorcycles, helping with knife-throwing and fire-breathing. A keen sense of smell may be useful in winemaking, but the cited explainer does not provide a policy date or the policy wording, so the amount and restrictions should be read as GEICO’s account rather than independently verified contract terms. A.M. Best reported in 2007 that Aquafresh White Trays insured actor America Ferrera’s smile for $10 million. Insurance Journal also reported coverage of her smile for up to $10 million. The policy was linked to a product campaign and a charity sweepstakes; the reports do not establish that Ferrera personally bought the insurance. A.M. Best’s 2007 report; Insurance Journal’s 2007 report.
3. Legs insured for dance, performance or publicity
Legs feature in several well-known accounts, but their reported values come from different periods and contexts and are not a like-for-like contest. A.M. Best’s 2007 report lists Betty Grable’s legs at $1 million, Fred Astaire’s at $75,000 each and Michael Flatley’s at $39.24 million. Vanity Fair reported that Heidi Klum said in 2017 that her legs had been valued separately at $1 million and $1.2 million, a combined $2.2 million; a client arranged the coverage, and a scar was cited as the reason for the difference. These reports do not supply comparable policy terms. A.M. Best; Vanity Fair’s 2022 report.

9. Santa’s beard
Insurance Journal reported that Lloyd’s had issued coverage on Santa’s beard, and A.M. Best also lists Santa Claus’s beard among celebrity-style insured risks. Neither source gives a value or policy terms; the example is brief and should not be mistaken for a broadly available product. Insurance Journal; A.M. Best.
10. A hotel’s cover against ghosts
GEICO reports that the Royal Falcon Hotel in Lowestoft, England, insured staff and customers against death or disability caused by ghosts, poltergeists and other abnormal phenomena. Unusual policies are easiest to understand when the insured risk has a defined financial purpose: a performer’s livelihood, a sponsor’s campaign or a business’s specific exposure. But a striking headline or reported dollar amount alone cannot show what was covered, which exclusions applied, who paid for the policy, or whether it remains in force. Some examples are supported by trade or insurer reporting; others are brief historical accounts or explicitly alleged stories. Treat them as curiosities with varying levels of documentation, not as a ranked list of verified policy contracts.
