The California breach record naming GEICO links to a Delta Dental notice about the 2023 MOVEit Transfer vulnerability—not to a confirmed breach of GEICO’s auto-insurance systems. The public sample does not identify which personal information, if any, was exposed for a particular recipient. If you received a completed notice, use its details and instructions rather than assuming that all GEICO customers were affected.
What the GEICO filing says
California’s breach database lists GEICO Corporation with a breach date of May 27, 2023, and a report date of January 31, 2024. The linked document is a sample notification from Delta Dental of California and affiliates, titled “Delta Dental DDC and Affiliates Notification Letter 1.” California Attorney General’s breach database
Delta Dental’s sample says Progress Software announced a previously unknown vulnerability in MOVEit Transfer. Delta Dental says it learned on June 1, 2023, that unauthorized actors had exploited the vulnerability. Its investigation confirmed on July 6 that company information had been accessed and acquired without authorization between May 27 and May 30, 2023. A Maine Attorney General notice entry says GEICO provided dental insurance to employees through Delta Dental of California and affiliates. This supports an employee-benefits connection, but it does not establish that every GEICO employee, policyholder, or household was affected. Maine Attorney General breach notices

Does the public record say what information was exposed?
No. The public sample leaves the recipient’s affected data elements, personal determination date, and monitoring activation deadline as placeholders. It cannot show whether a particular person’s information was involved, or identify the information at issue for that person. Do not assume that a driver’s-license number or Social Security number was exposed in this MOVEit event; check the completed notice sent to you.
Is this the same as GEICO’s auto-quote-tool incidents?
No. New York regulators described a separate series of attacks on GEICO’s auto-insurance quoting tools beginning in November 2020. The New York Attorney General said about 116,000 New York residents’ information was exposed, largely through an insurance-agent quoting tool, and that some stolen driver’s-license information was used in fraudulent pandemic-era unemployment claims. The announcement said GEICO would pay $9.75 million in penalties. Those figures and circumstances concern the auto-quote incidents, not the Delta Dental MOVEit notification. The New York announcement also reported that more than 120,000 New Yorkers’ information was compromised across GEICO and Travelers combined. That is a combined figure, not a GEICO-only count. Regulators distinguished the consumer-facing quote website from a separate agents’ quote tool; they said the later attacks used the agents’ tool after GEICO remediated vulnerabilities in the consumer website.

Use the completed letter to confirm your exposure
Read the notice addressed to you for the affected information, eligibility, enrollment instructions, and deadline. The public sample contains blanks and cannot confirm your individual status or current eligibility for services.

Consider the monitoring offer described in the sample
The sample offers its intended recipient 24 months of Kroll identity monitoring, including credit monitoring, fraud consultation, identity-theft restoration, and up to $1 million in covered identity-fraud losses subject to policy conditions. Because the sample’s enrollment date and contact fields are placeholders, follow your own letter for the applicable terms and activation deadline.
Review accounts and credit information
The notice recommends watching account statements and credit reports and promptly reporting suspicious activity to the relevant account provider. If you see unfamiliar activity, contact the affected provider using contact details you obtain independently, rather than relying on an unexpected message.

Decide whether to use a fraud alert or credit freeze
The notice explains how to place a fraud alert or security freeze. It says freezes are free and notes that you may need to lift one temporarily before applying for credit. Check current official bureau and government guidance for procedures, since the sample may not reflect later changes.
