It filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2012, reorganized, and emerged as a smaller company focused mainly on commercial printing and advanced materials and chemicals. It still reports film activity, but it is no longer primarily the consumer photography company many people remember.
Why did Kodak file for bankruptcy?
Kodak’s decline was a long business transition, not the result of one decision. Competition increased, digital photography displaced the film-centered business model, and debt added financial pressure. The Associated Press described those pressures, while Kodak’s 2013 annual report shows the company was already pursuing a shift toward commercial imaging as it entered bankruptcy proceedings. The familiar claim that Kodak simply invented digital photography and then ignored it is too simple to explain what happened.
Eastman Kodak Company was founded by George Eastman in 1880 and incorporated in 1901. For generations, its name was associated with consumer film, cameras, and photography. As that market changed, the company’s established business faced a difficult transition.
Chapter 11 was a reorganization, not an immediate closure
On January 19, 2012, Eastman Kodak and its U.S. subsidiaries filed voluntary Chapter 11 petitions in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Kodak said it sought to reorganize, increase liquidity, monetize non-strategic intellectual property and businesses, resolve legacy liabilities, and focus on valuable business lines. During the proceedings, the debtors continued operating as debtors-in-possession. Kodak’s 2013 annual report describes the filing and restructuring.

What does Kodak do now?
In its August 2026 second-quarter results, Kodak described itself as a manufacturer focused on commercial print and advanced materials and chemicals (AM&C). It also reported that AM&C had introduced a range of still films. That establishes continuing film-related activity, but not a return to Kodak’s former role as a mass-market consumer photography company. The company’s Q2 2026 results reported year-over-year growth in Print and AM&C.
Kodak’s post-bankruptcy business was already oriented toward business customers. Its 2013 annual report described commercial, packaging, and functional printing, enterprise services, entertainment imaging, and commercial films among its activities. A contemporary Associated Press account likewise described a focus on commercial and packaging printing.

Print remains central to the company’s stated strategy
Kodak’s 2025 annual release called Print its largest revenue driver and described a longer-term plan, begun in 2019, to reduce debt while investing in infrastructure and product innovation. The company also said it was pursuing Class 2 certification for higher-margin specialty products. Pursuing certification is a plan, not evidence that certification has been completed. Kodak’s full-year 2025 release sets out those statements.
What do Kodak’s latest financial results show?
The latest results located here are for the quarter ended June 30, 2026, reported August 4, 2026. They show a stronger year-over-year quarter, alongside cash below its December 2025 level. The quarterly figures and full-year 2025 figures cover different periods and should not be treated as interchangeable.

| Measure | Q2 2026 | Q2 2025 comparison | Context |
|---|---|---|---|
| Revenue | $311 million | $263 million | Consolidated revenue, as reported by Kodak for the respective quarters. |
| GAAP net income (loss) | $17 million income | $26 million loss | GAAP results, as reported by Kodak. |
| Operational EBITDA | $36 million | $9 million | Kodak’s non-GAAP measure; it is not the same as GAAP net income. |
| Cash | $290 million at June 30, 2026 | $337 million at December 31, 2025 | These are quarter-end and year-end balances, not matching quarterly periods. |
Kodak attributed the cash decline from year-end 2025 mainly to a required term-loan repayment and increased inventory, partly offset by proceeds from redeeming pension-plan reversion investments. The company said revenue, gross profit, and Operational EBITDA had each grown year over year for four consecutive quarters. That is a reported trend, not proof of a lasting recovery.
Full-year 2025 was profitable on gross profit, but recorded a GAAP net loss
For the year ended December 31, 2025, Kodak reported revenue of $1.069 billion, gross profit of $232 million, a GAAP net loss of $128 million, Operational EBITDA of $62 million, and year-end cash of $337 million. Kodak attributed the net loss primarily to the non-recurring termination of the Kodak Retirement Income Plan and the excise tax paid on the reversion of assets. The company reported these annual figures in 2026; its full-year release provides the details.

Why did reports say Kodak might close?
In August 2025, Kodak’s quarterly filing included a going-concern disclosure connected to debt obligations coming due and then-planned financing and pension-asset transactions. The disclosure reflected uncertainty around the company’s ability to meet obligations under those circumstances; it was not itself an announcement that Kodak had stopped operating.
On August 13, 2025, Kodak responded to media reports by saying: “Kodak has no plans to cease operations, go out of business, or file for bankruptcy protection.” That was the company’s statement at the time, not a guarantee about its future. Its subsequent Q2 2026 results document continued operations and reported performance, but do not establish long-term solvency or growth. Kodak’s August 2025 response and its August 2026 results provide the relevant statements.

What to take away from Kodak’s turnaround
- Kodak filed for Chapter 11 protection in 2012 and continued operating during its reorganization.
- Its post-bankruptcy business became smaller and more oriented toward commercial customers.
- It still reports film activity, while identifying commercial print and advanced materials and chemicals as its focus.
- Q2 2026 results improved year over year, but one stronger quarter does not settle the company’s longer-term financial outlook.
These figures and company descriptions are current through the Q2 2026 release dated August 4, 2026; later filings may change the picture.
