Ne Zha 2 is a 2025 Chinese animated fantasy sequel—and Guinness World Records’ dated figures show it passed Inside Out 2 to become the highest-grossing animated film worldwide. Guinness reported worldwide receipts of 14,265,482,649 yuan ($1,989,046,691) through 30 June 2025, compared with Inside Out 2’s previous record of $1,698,831,782. Those are record figures measured through that date, not a live October 2026 box-office total.
What is Ne Zha 2?
Ne Zha 2 is the 2025 Chinese animated fantasy sequel to Ne Zha (2019). Its Chinese title is 哪吒之魔童闹海, often shortened to 哪吒2, according to China’s National Film Administration. The story follows Nezha and Aobing after their souls are saved but their physical bodies face dissolution. With help from Taiyi Zhenren and a Seven-Colored Lotus, they attempt to rebuild their bodies and confront further challenges, according to a Hunan government summary republished from Xinhua.

The film draws on a character from Chinese mythological and literary tradition, rather than introducing a new hero. The Associated Press describes Ne Zha as a child god-general and mischievous boy associated with the story known as Creation of the Gods, written about 400 years ago. That background is context, not evidence that the movie is a literal adaptation of a single ancient text.
How did it pass Inside Out 2?
Guinness World Records identifies Ne Zha 2 as the highest-grossing animation at the global box office. Its worldwide figure through 30 June 2025 was 14,265,482,649 yuan ($1,989,046,691). Guinness lists the prior record, held by Pixar’s Inside Out 2, as $1,698,831,782. The comparison is between worldwide animated-film box-office records; it is not a comparison of a single country’s totals.

The China-only figure is a separate market record with an earlier cutoff date. It should not be substituted for the worldwide total. Currency conversions above are the figures reported by Guinness, not new calculations.
What do the earlier box-office milestones mean?
As the film’s run progressed, China’s National Film Administration reported interim milestones based on platform data. These help explain the pace of its success, but they are not its final reported totals.
- By 9 p.m. on 7 February 2025, box-office receipts including presales had exceeded 6.7922 billion yuan. The administration said this surpassed Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ North American single-market gross.
- By 8 February 2025, the reported total had exceeded 7 billion yuan.
These early figures and Guinness’s later worldwide and China-only record figures describe different dates and measures. A presales-inclusive milestone should not be treated as though it were the final worldwide total.

The film’s scale extended beyond its box-office result. A Xi’an municipal government account reported that 138 Chinese production teams took part. It names Xi’an Digital Monster Technology as one participant and describes its visual-effects work; that is an example of the production network, not a complete crew list.
Ne Zha’s cultural familiarity provides another part of the context. The character predates the film, while this sequel offers its own contemporary animated interpretation. The movie’s record-breaking reception shows that a story rooted in Chinese tradition also found a large audience beyond its home market; the box-office figures establish the scale of that reception, not why every viewer chose to see it.
When did it reach international theaters?
Ne Zha 2 opened in China during the 2025 Spring Festival period. In a contemporaneous report, China’s National Film Administration listed Australia’s release for 13 February 2025 and North America’s for 14 February 2025. Those are historical release dates, not a current schedule.
