EMC acquired privately held Aveksa on July 8, 2013, and placed it immediately within RSA, its security division. The move gave RSA Aveksa’s identity governance and provisioning capabilities, which EMC said would help advance its vision for more adaptive identity and access management (IAM). The companies described a strategic goal—not a measured result—and did not disclose the acquisition terms.
What RSA gained from Aveksa
The buyer was EMC Corporation, not RSA as a separate acquiring company. EMC said Aveksa would operate within RSA’s Identity Trust Management product group. It characterized Aveksa as a business-driven IAM provider with strengths in identity and access governance and provisioning. EMC’s July 8, 2013 announcement framed the acquisition as a way to bring those capabilities into RSA’s security portfolio.
In practical terms, governance helps organizations define and review who should have access to which systems, while provisioning concerns granting, changing, or removing access as identities and roles change. The announcement positioned Aveksa’s capabilities as part of a broader enterprise identity strategy, rather than as a standalone consumer product.
Why EMC said it made the acquisition
EMC and RSA said they wanted to automate identity lifecycles and make access management more adaptive across enterprise and cloud environments. Their rationale was that access decisions could take account of business context, including roles and processes, rather than rely only on static rules. The announcement used terms such as “agile” and “intelligent” to describe the intended direction; it did not report independent measurements showing that the acquisition delivered those outcomes.

Aveksa CEO Vick Vaishnavi described the intended direction this way: “Together with RSA, we can continue our journey to adaptive identity management that addresses today’s ever-evolving access challenges.” That was his forward-looking view at the time of the deal.
How the product lineage developed
RSA’s July 22, 2015 announcement introduced a new version of RSA Via Lifecycle and Governance and identified the offering as formerly Identity Management and Governance and Aveksa. RSA described functions including identity lifecycle governance, application onboarding, checks of access changes against policy, and detection of unauthorized access changes. It also said the product could connect identity context with RSA Archer governance, risk, and compliance operations. These are descriptions in a 2015 product announcement, not confirmation of present-day availability. RSA’s 2015 announcement also quoted RSA executive Jim Ducharme saying organizations should approach identity, security, and compliance holistically and use solutions suited to dynamic IT environments.
On June 1, 2022, RSA announced a brand focus on identity and presented ID Plus as an IAM suite intended for cloud, on-premises, and hybrid deployments. That announcement provides later corporate context, but does not establish the exact 2026 product lineup or whether an offering described in 2015 remains available under the same name. RSA’s 2022 identity announcement is the relevant dated reference.

EMC did not disclose the acquisition terms, so no purchase price can be stated from the announcement. The available company statements explain the strategic intent and later product naming, but do not provide customer deployment results, quantified performance gains, or evidence that the intended benefits were achieved. The acquisition is best understood as a historical enterprise IAM move: EMC brought Aveksa’s governance and provisioning expertise into RSA as a foundation for its adaptive IAM ambitions.
