U.S. safety regulators have publicly described expanded investigations into Shein, Temu and similar platforms, with a focus on dangerous children’s products and the challenges of enforcing U.S. rules against overseas sellers. That is not a finding that either marketplace—or everything sold through it—is unsafe. The public record includes a specific U.S. recall of children’s pajamas sold on Shein, while broader investigative conclusions have not been disclosed.
Why did U.S. regulators say Shein and Temu should be investigated?
The original call came on September 3, 2024, when then-Acting Chairman Peter A. Feldman and Commissioner Douglas Dziak of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) asked agency staff to evaluate Shein, Temu and other foreign e-commerce platforms’ compliance with the Consumer Product Safety Act. Their statement raised questions about platform safety controls, relationships with third-party sellers and consumers, import representations, and the difficulty of enforcing U.S. requirements when sellers have little or no U.S. presence. It was a request for examination by two commissioners, not a published CPSC determination that Shein or Temu had violated the law. The statement also said the commissioners’ views did not necessarily reflect the Commission’s views. Reports about dangerous baby and toddler goods helped explain their concerns, but those reports were not CPSC test findings.
The issue is platform accountability and how consumer-product rules apply to cross-border sales—not proof that a product is hazardous simply because it is inexpensive or comes from an overseas seller.

Did the CPSC later say it was investigating the platforms?
Yes. In remarks delivered February 16, 2026, Feldman said the CPSC had expanded investigations into Chinese e-commerce platforms including Temu and Shein, focusing on dangerous children’s products and enforcement challenges involving overseas sellers. Read the remarks.
Those remarks establish that the agency publicly described expanded investigative activity. They do not identify listing-level or seller-level targets, disclose case files or conclusions, or establish that every product on either marketplace is unsafe.

What product-safety evidence has been made public?
A specific U.S. recall involving Shein pajamas
On February 13, 2025, the CPSC recalled about 17,300 SHEIN EVRYDAY Kids pajama sets sold exclusively on Shein. The notice said the children’s sleepwear violated federal flammability requirements and posed a burn hazard. No incidents or injuries had been reported at the time of the notice; consumers were offered a refund. This is a documented recall of a named product, not a platform-wide finding. A separate Malta footwear action
On December 9, 2024, Malta’s Competition and Consumer Affairs Authority said it had ordered five children’s footwear products sold via Shein and Temu recalled after accredited laboratory testing found cadmium, lead, phthalates and paraffins above limits under the EU REACH Regulation. The authority said 10 clothing and footwear items were tested: all five slippers and rain boots failed, while the clothing items did not. How to interpret agency-wide figures
Feldman’s February 2026 remarks reported that the CPSC recorded 542 recalls and safety warnings and 26 million products recalled in 2025, and issued nearly 90,000 takedown notices to third-party sellers. These are agency-wide figures, not counts of Shein or Temu violations. Source: CPSC Toy Fair remarks.
In a separate 2025 statement, the CPSC said it requested seizure of more than 750,000 individual units after screening tens of thousands of shipments during the first seven months of that year. It also said almost 92 percent of recalled Chinese products were tied to e-commerce platforms, collectively including Amazon, Walmart.com, Temu, Shein and AliExpress. Is the FTC action against Temu a product-safety case?
No. In September 2025, the Federal Trade Commission announced a proposed $2 million civil penalty over alleged violations of the INFORM Consumers Act by Temu. The complaint concerned marketplace reporting mechanisms for suspicious activity and disclosures that help identify certain high-volume third-party sellers. The proposed consent order required court approval, so the announcement alone does not establish the order’s later status. This is a seller-transparency matter, not a finding that a particular Temu product was hazardous. Read the FTC announcement.
How can you check whether a Shein or Temu purchase has been recalled?
- Open the CPSC recalls and product-safety warnings database.
- Search for the product name, brand, model or seller. Compare the listing and item details with the notice rather than relying on a broad marketplace name.
- If the product matches, follow the notice’s instructions. Depending on the recall, the remedy may include stopping use, obtaining a refund, disposing of the item or contacting a named party.
A search with no matching result means only that you did not find a matching notice in the database; it is not a CPSC safety certification. The database is updated as notices and remedies change.
