The MacBook Neo is unusually repairable by recent MacBook standards, according to iFixit’s 2026 teardown: it scored the laptop 6/10 and called it the most repairable MacBook in about fourteen years. Its screw-fastened battery and modular ports are meaningful advantages, but they do not make every repair simple—and soldered memory and storage cannot be upgraded later.
How repairable is the MacBook Neo?
iFixit’s 6/10 score reflects its own repairability scale, not a universal standard for comparing every laptop. In MacBook terms, however, the Neo stands out: iFixit said, “We haven’t been as happy about a MacBook since 2012,” and TechCrunch reported the organization’s view that the design’s screw-secured battery, modular ports, and more replaceable display are notable improvements.
MacRumors reported iFixit’s scores of 5/10 for the M4 MacBook Air and 4/10 for the 14-inch M5 MacBook Pro alongside the Neo’s 6/10. Those figures are useful as iFixit’s comparisons among these MacBooks, not as a neutral cross-brand ranking. The teardown evidence supports a practical conclusion: several components are easier to access or replace than the glued-in, tightly integrated parts common in less repair-friendly designs, but repairs can still involve substantial disassembly.
What the teardown found inside
Opening the case and reaching components
iFixit found that removing eight pentalobe screws lets the lower case open by hand. The battery, speakers, ports, and trackpad can be reached without first removing another component. The pentalobe fasteners do require a special screwdriver, and deeper work still means disconnecting cables.

A separate teardown by Tech Re-Nu, reported by MacRumors, also described eight bottom-case screws and Torx fasteners inside. It found modular USB-C ports, speakers, and a headphone jack, with only a small amount of adhesive securing the trackpad cable. Its account reported no tape elsewhere in the disassembly. These are teardown observations, not a guarantee that every unit or repair will be identical.
Battery: removable without adhesive, but not quickly
The clearest repairability improvement is the battery’s screw-fastened tray. The Tech Re-Nu teardown account said the battery was held by 18 screws and lifted out without removing battery adhesive. iFixit likewise highlighted the screw-secured battery, reflecting the principle it summarized as “screws still beat adhesive every time.” Avoiding adhesive removal can simplify battery access, but undoing 18 screws is still a hands-on repair rather than a quick swap.

Ports, speakers, and trackpad
The modular USB-C ports and headphone jack are important because a damaged port need not require replacing a larger assembly, based on the teardown findings. The speakers and trackpad were also accessible without removing another part first. Accessibility can reduce the amount of disassembly; it does not establish repair time, parts cost, or whether a replacement part is currently available.
Display and keyboard
iFixit reported that display removal was easier after antenna and hinge work, and that the keyboard can be removed separately from the top case. But keyboard replacement required removing 41 screws. “Replaceable” therefore describes the design, not a promise of a fast or simple job.

Can you upgrade MacBook Neo RAM or storage?
No, not after purchase: iFixit reported that the RAM and storage are soldered to the board. A repair-friendly layout does not make those components upgradeable. Buyers should choose enough memory and storage for their expected use at purchase, because the teardown does not indicate a later module swap.
Does Apple provide a repair manual?
Apple published a model-specific MacBook Neo Repair Manual on March 11, 2026. Its listed sections include tools, safety material, an exploded view and orderable-parts section, and procedures for the battery, display, USB-C boards, audio board, trackpad, and keyboard variants. The manual’s landing page documents procedures and parts categories; it does not establish live inventory, prices, or eligibility in a particular region. Check Apple’s current model-specific service information before relying on a part or procedure being available to you.

What the repairability evidence does—and does not—show
The evidence supports a strong improvement on several repair tasks: battery access avoids adhesive removal, multiple components are modular or readily accessible, and the keyboard can be replaced separately. It also documents real limits: significant screw counts, special fasteners, cable connections, and soldered RAM and storage. iFixit’s score and its “about fourteen years” comparison are its own assessment of MacBooks, not a standardized industry benchmark or proof that the Neo outranks all other laptops.
