Prosecutors said she arranged hundreds of unauthorized food orders, including more than 11,000 cases of chicken wings, and that the district paid for food that was not provided to students.
What happened
Prosecutors said Liddell’s scheme ran from July 2020 through February 2022, when students were learning remotely. The district still arranged meals that families could pick up. According to prosecutors, Liddell placed hundreds of food orders separately from the district’s legitimate orders, including more than 11,000 cases of wings through the district’s main supplier, Gordon Food Service.
The district paid the supplier. News reports say Liddell used a district cargo van to collect the food; prosecutors said it was not brought to the school or provided to students. The reported loss was more than $1.5 million in food, primarily chicken wings—not necessarily wings alone. FOX 32 Chicago reported the case details, as did The Guardian.
How the spending came to light
A routine mid-year audit by the district’s business manager in January 2022 found that the food-service department had exceeded its annual budget by more than $300,000, even though the school year was only halfway through. That discrepancy prompted scrutiny of the department’s spending. The audit figure is the reported budget overrun at that point, not the total value of the alleged theft.

The plea and sentence
Liddell pleaded guilty and received a nine-year prison sentence in August 2024. CBS Chicago’s report also covered the guilty plea and sentence. The case’s unauthorized-order and food-distribution details are allegations attributed to prosecutors; the plea and sentence are the reported legal outcome.
Why the case matters to a school district’s finances
The episode shows how unusual spending can become visible through a basic budget control: comparing year-to-date expenses with the annual budget. Here, a mid-year overspend drew attention to food-service purchases. The reporting does not establish which additional controls the district used or what changes it later made, so the case should not be treated as proof that one particular audit practice would prevent similar losses everywhere.
