What age restrictions did Bliss Restaurant have?
June 2024 reports described a policy requiring women to be 30 or older and men to be 35 or older. The Washington Post reported that Bliss had operated under the rule since opening in May 2024, presenting it as part of the owners’ goal of creating a “grown and sexy” atmosphere. The Washington Post’s June 10, 2024 report covered the policy and its stated purpose.

Local reporting said staff checked identification at the door. First Alert 4 reported that after 7 p.m., people who appeared younger than 30 had to show identification to the hostess or a St. Louis County police officer. That account describes the reported verification practice at the time; it does not establish the restaurant’s present procedures. First Alert 4’s June 12, 2024 report described the checks.
Why did the owners say they adopted the rule?
The owners said they wanted to serve people in their 30s and 40s and offer an environment where older patrons could enjoy food and happy hour among people closer to their age. Co-owner Marvin Pate connected the idea to customers wanting to be around people in their own age group. Assistant manager Erica Rhodes described the aim as helping older guests relax without worrying about disruption from younger visitors.

Those comments explain the owners’ rationale; they do not establish that age predicts how a guest will behave. The reaction reported at the time was mixed: some customers welcomed the atmosphere, while others objected to the restrictions.
Is Bliss Restaurant’s age policy legal?
The central legal concern identified in the reporting was not simply that the restaurant set a minimum age. In a July 5, 2024 report, St. Louis Public Radio quoted Washington University law professor Travis Crum as saying that federal and Missouri public-accommodations law, as he described it, did not restrict age discrimination in this context. He said the different thresholds for women and men could be problematic under the Missouri Human Rights Act because the policy used a person’s sex to determine the applicable age limit. The report also described the owners’ position that the law did not apply because Bliss was a private business. They said they had consulted attorneys but remained unclear. The article invoked Craig v. Boren, a 1976 Supreme Court case involving a sex-based age distinction for access to low-alcohol beer, as legal context. That case was not a ruling about Bliss, and the reporting does not establish that a court ever decided whether Bliss’s policy was lawful.

The available reporting establishes what Bliss’s policy was described as in 2024, but it does not establish a later policy change or legal proceeding. Bliss’s current official website lists its Florissant location and services, including reservations, events, catering, and ordering, but does not state the age thresholds. If you plan to visit, contact the restaurant directly to confirm its current admission rules.
